Subject: Torque for Pinion nut? IP: Logged
Message: I need to replace the pinion seal on my 2001 Dakota, and I was just thinking, is there a torque value for the pinion nut? 8 1/4 rear end.
Whatever the amount, I should be able to get it. Got a 20-150ft/lb wrench and another that goes to 700 ft lbs.

Message: Never did a Dakota But I have done a lot of these over the years. this nut is very very tight as you will discover when you try to remove it. My way was to set the emergency brake TIGHT and use a braker bar with a 3 ft. pipe on it. To attest the presure required to losen this pinion nut I still have this QUALITY braker and it is bent. I have had a few that needed a cold chesel and hammer to split the nut to break it free. Always reinstall with a NEW QUALITY lock washer. I have never had a torque wrench big enough to measure this presure but I did reinstall the nut using the pipe and as much presure as I could muster. Not the proper way to do this job but it works and I never had a failure in 40 plus years in my shop.

Message: According to my FSM, torque on my 2004's (9-1/4") pinion nut is 250 ft lbs.

Message: "Lockwasher"? Never seen one of those on a Pinion nut LOL! I assume you meant locking nut.
Be careful when you read a manual. When you are torqing to CRUSH the cruch sleeve, it takes a butt load of torque.
If you are just carefully replacing the seal, you don't need as much torque. Enough to keep things tight and together, but not enough to further crush the crush sleeve.
Using a 3 foot breaker bar and the wheels locked. You could probably tighten the nut hard enough to get it tight without being able to crush the crush sleeve.
I haven't been able to crush a crush sleeve with a breaker bar. I've had to use a hi torque impact to do that.

Message: Replace washer was a poor expression. most do have a lock nut and I ALWAYS replace it. Some older ones did have a lock washer of a type(not tipical). I don't think they have been used in many years. Don't forget, I'm going back more then 40 years in my shop and a lot farther then that in years old the autos were. 250 lbs of torque sounds about right. Eat your wheaties before you tackle that nut lol.

If the book says 210 or whatever, then that has to be just when replacing the seal. Because 210, 250, etc is NOT going to crush the sleeve. That is for certain!

Message: Your pretty much right or close enough. Sometimes I skip part of what My mind is saying . lol . It should have read replace the lock nut and WASHER if it has one . No harm done. You come to the rescue lol.

Message: LOL! Funny thing is I just learned alot about this just last year when I swapped my gears. I had farted around with swapping in junk yard gear sets in the past on hobbie / backyard built hot rods but being close was good enough on those. But on my Dak I needed it to TOW and be reliable. Some guy taught me alot online and I did my front and rear gears with NEW parts last fall.
Rear ends are one part of a vehicle not every "Mechanic" will mess with. :p
I'm not afraid to try something. You can always learn by breaking something if you have to. Luckily that wasn't the case with my diffs. But I did learn about needing a higher torque impact gun than the one I had been using for years when it came to them pinion nuts crushing the sleeves.

I guess I'll have to get out that Proto Torque wrench that I mentioned. I bought it for old JD diesel tractors. Didn't think I'd use it on my truck!

Message: Hey Brandon, did one on my 94 this spring. It would be much easier with lift. I did mine on drive up ramps. If your brakes don't hold you
could use a large pipe wrench on the yoke or make something to go over the yoke. When you turn the nut the wrench can wedge itself against
the ground. You may have to push with your leg.
With the wheels up an freely spinning turn the pinion nut to see how much torque is needed to turn the wheels. Save that number for after installation. After final tightening recheck the wheels for free spinning. If you over torque it you could cause the bearings to wear prematurly.

Message: Brandon, just be careful to NOT jar the truck off the jack stands when you're loosening/tightening the pinion nut. It's happened before!
