Subject: Prepping Truck for Nitrous/Turbo IP: Logged
Message: Okay...so went to this Dyno Day thing at a local sports shop and it really re-sparked my interest in modding the hell out of my truck.
I got a 98 3.9L, auto tranny, 73,000 miles on it...my goal is to eventually set up a remote turbo kit, but before that I'll probably look into an NX nitrous kit. I'd like to run a 75 or 100 shot.
I wanna go into this the smart way and make sure my engine can handle the added power before slapping everything together and running it til something breaks.
What do I need to look into to get this engine able to handle a lot of added power/boost?
I'm figuring on intake gaskets/plenum gasket...fuel management system, bigger fuel pump? Bigger injectors? Better headgaskets? Some advice from those who have run nitrous or a turbo would be great.

Message: For the nitrous as long as its a wet kit you dont need a fuel management system or bigger injectors because the kit comes with its own fogger nozzle. If your worried about the pump just get a fuel pressure cut off switch. They are pretty cheap and good insurance. Or you can get them in a kit if you want to get serious about nitrous. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=NEX%2DGEN%2DX&N=700+0%2B115&autoview=sku
As for the head gaskets. I would just let em go until they blow. Ive never worked with a 3.9 before so im not sure how much of a beating they can take. Ive ran some pretty ridiculus amounts of nitrous on V6s. Some of them blow head gaskets and some of them fry the bottom end instead(rods, crank, pistons, etc...) and some of them just friggin GO!!
If you were going to upgrade anything I would say it would have to be your bottom end. If a head gasket fails big deal. If a piston fails there is a great chance your head, block, rods, and crank could get damaged.
As for the turbo, I dont have alot of experience with them. Im more of an old school kind of guy and not to many muscle cars have turbos. Just check the kit you are thinking about to see what it comes with. Most give you exactly what you need to make the extra power or at least they will tell you what you are going to need.
