seem to be having trouble getting all the plugs out... am i supposed to remove things? cuz theres a lot in the way...but i remember peeple saying this was easy. looks to me like i havta take a lot apart...or has something changed in the 05 model

Have to remove the air hat to access one on mine, and pop a clip holding the heater hoses for another. Then we just need to unbolt the coils instead of pulling wires. Not such a big deal - is yours worse ?

i thnk so...i got some metal tubes in the way of about 4 outta 8.
oh and i dont know the gap setting cuz the manual doesnt say...should i call the dealer>?

Are you talking about the heat shields around the plugs?
If so, they can be removed. Grab with vise grips, pull and twist. Have some alcohol and a bandaid ready for after you smack your knuckles.

trucky, check the underhood sticker for your plug gap.
zzark, there aren't any plug shields on the 4.7. i think he's talking about the fuel rail. i haven't been under the hood of a 4.7 lately.

I've never had a problem; using a universal attachment at the socket or the 24" extension (that has a rounded tip that allows the socket to flop around as if there was a universal). For the plug hidden under the brake booster just the socket and universal.
You are using an extension, aren't you? Get your ratchet out beyond the fender and life is easy.
If you check annually and your weather can cause rust, why not shoot some penetrating oil on each plug 30 minutes before working on it.
Slather sparkplug grease on the threads prior to re-install.
For goodness sake don't overtighten! Slightly over finger tight is enough.

thanx yah i think its the fuel line...its two parallel metal tubes about half inch diameter. my dad's ratchet doesnt bend enough to get to them...maybe just puttin the socket in my hand like shatto said...

The metal cross over tubes are for your heater. Here's how I changed mine on an '03, 4.7:
Loosen the hose clamps and remove the accordian tube between the filter box and the air hat.
Loosen the hose clamp holding the air hat to the Throttle Body.
Find the plastic brackets that hold both the air hat and the crossover tubes.
Unbolt the bolt (10mm socket) on each side holding the air hat.
Disconnect the air tube from the Throttle Body and fold the air hat back toward the rear of the truck being careful of the wires attached to the hat.
Carefully unclip the part of the plastic brackets metioned before that hold the crossover tubes.
Unbolt the plastic brackets and remove them.
Now you can gently move the crossover tubes so you have straight access into the plugs - no U-joint on the socket needed.
Take the wires off the coil modules by squeezing top and bottom on the connector before pulling outward.
Unscrew the nut holding the coil module with the 10mm socket. Pull out the coil modules.
Put it all back in revese order. Piece of cake. Have a beer and congratulate yourself you saved a bundle over having the dealer do it. By the way I still like my NGK p/n 7100's!

On the older models, that plastic clip has a release so you don't have to remove it for the heater lines. No release on the newer ones ?

There wasn't much play to lift the crossover tubes out of the brackets with the clip released is why I took the brackets off. The clip and bracket are the same piece on mine. Maybe the newer hoses are shorter so DC could save a nickel! With the tubes free I had conserable more play to move them around.
