 Subject: fuel gauge

Have a 2001 Dakota Quad 4-wheel drive slt, With only 2500 miles, the fuel gauge stopped working. Took it in and the dealer said it was a bad gauge. Replaced it and then told me that the bad gauge had caused some computor to go bad and that it now needed to be replaced. Problem is that the part is on back order for about 6 weeks, WHY? Odd that the fuel gauge still does not work. Is this a problem with alot of other Dakotas? Is this a coincidence that both these parts are defective? Anyone else having this problem? Also my truck sometimes seems to run hard after being stopped for a while. Almost like it does not want to shift into an upper gear.

I have a 94 Dodge Dakota, and my fuel gauge stopped working around 50,000 Miles.
I have asked a lot of owners about their fuel gauges, and about half of them say that they had problems with their fuel gauge too.

Me three, I hear the connections for the sending unit in the gas tank wear out after awhile but, I think a 2001 is a little new for that to happen to. Try filling up the tank with the key in the "ON" position and the motor off, it worked for me when it first happened last year at 32,000 miles, now 43,000.

No problems on mine, over 81000 miles. I just wish it had a bigger tank, my wifes minivan has a 25 gallon tank.

I HAVE A 01 AND MINE DOESNT WORK AND THEN DOES. IT STICKS ON E AND THEN I HAVE TO SHUT IT OFF AND RE START IT.

That sounds like maybe a ground problem...or a sending unit problem. 1st one's easy, just got to find it. 2nd one's in the tank.

I have a 1985 5th Chrysler Avenue the fuel gauge says that there is no fuel the gauge is on empty and the indicator light is flashing.
I can get the car to start if the carb bowl is full, but once it is running the fuel pump stops sending fuel. We replaced the pump... but we still have the problem. There is more than 10 gal's of gas in the tank.
anyone know what the prblem might be???

I have the same problem with my 2001 QC. The dealer said the fuel sending unit was bad. Unfortunately the entire fuel pump would have to be replaced to fix it. $$$ I just live with the problem. it only occurs on mine for the first 50-100 miles after a fill-up. It first started occuring at about 35,000 miles. I now have 60,500.

I have a 1994 SLT; purchased new. The fuel gauge quit working in 1994. The dealer replaced the sending unit two or three times and the gauge would then work for several months. This went on until the warranty expired. The gauge reads just below one-fourth to this day. I wondered about a ground problem, who knows?

I have a 2002 dakota QC 4x4 and the fuel gauge just started giving me problems when I start it the fuel gauge reads empty and the low fuel light comes on it stays that way untill the key is turned off anyone ahve any idea's the truck has 88,000 miles and this the first problem

CALDWELL...... You have a very typical problem . I call it DEALERITESS . They have no clue what your problem is so there guessing and as long as your willing to pay the bucks, there going to keep at it till they MAYBE get lucky. Do you recall the mid 70's when VW bugs started installing fuel injection. What a joke that was in my town. Any electrical problem that happened to the bug had a simple fix. There words here... We have no way of knowing your problem. We change electrical parts till the problem is fixed. You pay the bill to the end including every part we install. ELECTRICAL PARTS are not refundable. WOW . Was that a joke or what . Didn't take long owners discovered 120 miles down the road where they actually had the equipment to figure out the problems . They went bankrupt less then 2 years after fuel injection came out on them . In a dealer ship the shop payes all your overhead totally > your profit is in your sale period this coming from a great friend. The dealership owner I bought my Dakota from

Yesterday as i was going to get new tires for my 2005 slt 4x4 dakota i noticed that my gas gauge wasent going down and that also my milage tac wasent dropping either... (stuck at 121 miles till empty) and now today I run out of gas on my way too work... well i borrowed 4 gallons from work and put it in my truck. I lissend for the fuel pump to engadge an it made a differnt sound then normal but the truck started... it wasent a horrible noise just not normal. So i go to the gas station an put another 7 gallons in it... but still the gauge dident move or my Milage tac. (still reading 121). Anyone have any ideas what it could be... a mechanic at work suggested it could be the Fuel Pump Relay (sensor/fuse) i dont know if its a fuse or sensor... but its in the fuse box under the hood. The truck has 42,000 on it... any knowlegde on the problem would be a big help. Thanks.

Can't be the relay, since the truck is running, the relay must be closed and pump running.
The abnormal noise from the pump suggests that you overheated and damaged it by running out of gas. Pumps depend on fuel around them to cool them off, that's why you shouldn't run below 1/4 tank too often. You might think about replacing it before too long.
If gas gauge and odometer don't register, look for a fuse blown, then check wiring connections to the dash.

I have a 94 Dakota with the gas hand on empty and the gas
light on. Doesn't matter how much gas i put in it the hand will
not move nor does the light go off. Don't know where to
start???

Trab - First step is to check the wiring back to
the tank, to see if there's a break.
You DO have a competent service manual, right?
For instance, I have both the Chrysler factory
service manual AND an AllDataDIY subscription for
my 1988 Dakota ... either or both will have the
wiring diagrams.
Both will also have diagrams that show you where
the interconnects are.
Worst case - if the sending unit in the gas tank
has failed, for 1990, you CAN purchase just the
sending unit, which according to the
MoparFactoryParts dot com website is #52017992.
I'd ALSO replace the internal hoses (note: They
DO have to tolerate being soaked in E15 or better
to keep from fouling the fuel system!), the pump,
the strainer, and the gasket for the fuel pump
assmebly. I also replaced the filler neck hose
and the other rubber hoses at the tank on my 1988,
but then, they were turning to mush ...
