Subject: Engine Code IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2003 Dakota QC. The "check engine light" is on and the code is P0442- medium Evaporative Emission Control Leak has been detected. Any ideas where to start looking for the problem. I already checked the gas cap. Thanks

Message: You need to check all hoses, connections, and so on in the entire evap system for leaks. Check the VECI label under the hood for routing and components of the evap system. The evap purge solenoid could be stuck open. There could also be a failure of the leak detection pump system. All can trigger p0442.

Message: When you say "I've already checked the gas cap" what do you mean? If you haven't replaced it with an AFTERMARKET cap, just looking at the threads/seal won't do you any good. Mine looked great, clicked when I tightened it, but in the end, an AFTERMARKET gas cap did the trick.

Message: By checking the cap, I mean tightening it until,it clicks. I unhooked the negative battery terminal and turned the ignition on for 30 seconds and put the negative lead back on. Went for a 1/2 hour drive last night and the light never come back on yet. Maybe that will work.
