 Subject: Mud terrains and Milleage???

Does anyone keep track of their milleage enough to know if you get worse gas milleage when MT's are put on a Dakota. Is it THAT noticeable? I'm looking for new tires, and gas prices like they are, I'm trying not to use alot of gas. any input would be great.
I have Wrangler RT/S's on now.

My Dakota came with Goodyears. I replaced them after sliding through an innersection in the rain, brakes locked. Replaced them with Bridgestones. Better traction. Replaced those with Michelins. Better yet.
Got almost 95,000 miles out of Goodyears. 118,000 miles was how far the Bridgestones went. My first set of Michelins went 160,000 miles before replacement.
I don care bout no stinkin wear bars.
Doesn't rain or snow that much in the Bay Area. Can get away with my kind of mileage.
As to your question; no, it doesn't seem to make a major difference, however, once you are showing serious wear bars your mileage will drop off. Slicks are great for dry pavement traction but lousy for mileage. In my case a mile, maybe two, so my overall mileage will be the low 18's to 19's with worn tires, high 18's to 19's with better tires.
A highway tread (Michelin) will be quieter and give better MPG.
Americas Tire Store is where I got the Michelins. They rotate and check the air (35lb)every 5,000 miles. Michelin recommends cross rotation on their non-directional tread tires to even the wear. Along with an alignment every 10,000 miles (Lifetime alignment at Firestone $130.00) because of inferior California road mantainance. This program seems to work.

Actually, it does make a difference. I went from the stock Goodyears to a knobier design in the same size and lost 1 mpg. Went from 16, to 15.

Even lowering it to 1-2MPG will affect it enough to me. I like to get as many MPG as I can get.
I can tell a difference in the way I drive. I can fill my tank up (I think it's about 22 gallons), and go 400 miles on a tank, or go almost down to 350 depending on if I floor it from a stop or "drive like an old person". But hey, I don't like to go to the pump more than twice a week.
So I guess the answer to my question is that if I'm this picky about milleage, I'm better off with all terrains. I don't think I can get highway tires though, I HAVE to have enough tread on the tire to actually see it :)

Food for thought;
1.Knobby, tough, masculine, go-anywhere, rugged looking tires are noisy, may cause vibration and wear out fast.
2.If you go for practicality, and are cheap like me, you'll have money left over.
If you spend the money wisely on baubles you may get you...pussy...cats or otherwise.
