Subject: Brake drag and smell

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad 2wd, my dad was borrowing it yesterday and when he brought it back to me he told me it felt like one of the brakes were dragging. I took a look at it and the front right wheel was very hot and it smelled like burnt electronics.

I checked fluid level and it was fine and no brake or abs lights. Once it cooled off I took the wheel off and it appeared that perhaps the pads had rusted onto the adapter ledges. I removed the caliper and greased the adapter ledges and inspected the rotor for cracks or discoloration and it seems fine. The pads looked good as well.

I put the wheel back on and tested the brakes before lowering it and it stopped and released fine.

One thing I noticed when greasing the adapter ledges is that it appears the pads have worn in a decent groove on it from rubbing, is this ok or should it be replaced?

Is this a common problem, I usually leave brake work for professionals but should this item be regularly checked and re-greased? It was only 20k miles ago that it received new pads.

Also this morning when driving it I noticed that the burnt electronics smell is coming from the front right brake, not nearly as strong but there. Its not dragging and operating fine, not overheating. Do I need to go ahead and replace the pads from this?

If the smell is there, it probably is or was dragging a bit - could be the caliper hanging up in the bore too. I recently had a similar problem with a rear wheel cylinder hanging up once in a while.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

When you hear hoofbeats, don't think Zebra.

Before taking pistons out, make sure the slides the caliper moves on are lubricated.
Even 'brake grease' dries out and gunkifys.

Its either the caliper or the hose. When the brakes are hot and you feel it start to drag, stop the truck and jack it up and take the tire off. Now undo the bleeder. If the wheel turns free after you undo the bleeder it needs a new hose. If it is still stuck than you have a sticky caliper. If its a caliper go ahead and replace both sides. Same for if its a hose.

I noticed in the service manual it only mentions to lube the caliper moves and not the slider pins. It only says to inspect to make sure the boots for the slider pins are in good shape.

Should we lube the slider pins as well? Also what is a good brand to use as the grease, any specifics? I have some crc caliper brake grease.

Lubricating the caliper ledges seem to be the fix. I have driven it with no problems this week after lubricating it. The smell is gone but it does feel like I have bit of a warped rotor up front now.

This coming weekend I am going to check the other side and regrease that side as well.

In regards to the slider pins, I do not know. Mine were clean, but I did put a light film of grease on them. I used caliper grease I got at Pepboys, I forget the brand. But if somebody has a good recommendation of what to use I would like to hear it.

If the groove in the pad prohibits the pads from properly opening and closing then yes it needs to be fixed. Usually you can light sand any problems away but you may need to use abutment clips on the pads. To replacement them you have to replace the entire knuckle which I know to cost around $300 a piece.

Checking the lube on the ledges should be done regularly, I usually look it over every tire rotation. CRC brake grease should be fine, I know they have synthetic brake caliper grease which holds up well.

In regards to the slider pins, I am not familar with what the manual says but I usually put a light film of grease on them.
