Message: worst oil i have every ran! i have gone through 7qts in 2500miles. so 2qts burned every 1250miles.
gas mileage went up probably because there is less weight in the oil pan lightening the load.
if anyone went 15,000miles with this oil in an old motor with out check it would run a big risk of frying the motor.
never had more than a 1qt added between oil changes with an other oil i have used and thats putting 3500mile between oil changes.
if Amsoil was sold in stores i would give them a try so dont try and sell to me through the internet and i hope your synthetic is ahead of mobiles.

Message: I'd say you are probably experiencing a leak in your engine somewhere. The big reason you are burning more (IMHO) is probably because the detergents in the Mobil1 have cleaned away all the crud that the other oils have left behind. There probably was a lot of cruddy buildup around the leak and the detergent cleaned that away too; this, in turn, caused the leak to get a bit larger. All of this is my speculation though taking into consideration how much more detergents and additives are in synthetics compared to regular oils.

Message: There's nothing wrong with the oil. I've used it for over 130K miles with no problems, only benefits.
Your math is a little fuzzy, too. 7 qts in 2500 miles equals a quart about every 350 miles. 2 quarts in 1250 miles would be a quart every 625 miles, or half as bad as the first part of your post. Which is it? Are you adding the oil in the right place? 8)

Message: I've used Mobil 1 in my vehicles for about 12 years. 145k on an Acura and 76k on my Dakota. The Dak is 1 quart low at 10k miles when I change oil and filter and start over. I've never had a problem! Perhaps your belly pan gasket is leaking? Its worth a look!

Message: with no drips in my driveway I dont think the truck is leaking.
i put 5qts when i changed the oil went 2500 miles and in that 2500 mile i had to add 2 more qts because the truck had burned off 2qts. so that comes out to every 1250miles traveled i burn off 1qt.
i bought this truck with 145k miles so who knows how well it was maintain before me. had i owned the truck at 60k miles and put a 100k miles on it using Mobile 1 i may not of had these problems.
i will be either going to a high mileage oil like Quaker State with Slik 50 or going to castrol synthetic blend, which i had very little burn off using.

Message: You may want to try something like Valvoline Maxlife. They "say" it is supposed to help recondition your engine's seals to stop leaks. Don't know how much truth is in that statement.

Message: Toolfan, the bellypan gasket leaks oil to the inside of the intake manifold because of the manifold vacuum, allowing the oil to be drawn into the combustion chambers and thus burnt. It will not leak down to the driveway.

Message: You should be using zero oil. You say no leaks. At the burn rate you state or going with the corrected math, You should be seeing a lot of smoke out the back. I have a 95 plymouth voyager. I bought it with 18,000 on it. It now has 30,000. First thing I did was put mobil 1 in it and used zero oil in 5,000 miles. Mitsu engine by the way. Please don't tell me there junk. By 95, the problems had been corrected and not unusual to see them with over 300,000 and using no oil. Also no leaks. BUT.... My 3rd oil change I went from mobil 1 syn to mobil 1 syn EP. Right off the bat, I used a Quart in 500 miles. But I'm smart enough to know this can happen in any engine. I added 3 quarts and fast as it started it stoped. I have now gone 7500 miles without a change and used none at all.
My thoughts are your engine is full of crude and the oil is cleaning it out. Once the rings and other things get free of crude your engine should shape up. Give it a chance. The other thought TOOLFAN is you drive the picc out of your truck daily. Your oil problem may be self inflected and your closer then you think to a blown engine. These trucks were not designed to be hot rods. It's a truck designed to be used as one.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: toolfan,
I think Jpkomm is closest. Bet you didn't run cleaner before you installed the M-1, did you? I had a Volvo camshaft sieze because I did that.
If you are burning oil it will only smoke when the engine is cold. Catalytic converters are good at burning off oil. How do your plugs look?
I don't know, but I have to think "High Mileage Oils" are designed to sludge up and seal rings and other assorted leaky places.
You can get Amsoil at some stores. Since you can go, oh say, 25,000 miles between changes, you might find having good 'ol Steve ship your oil to you helpful.

Message: I would say that you are the problem and not the oil. I run it with only slightly more oil consumption but I know that is due to the structure of synthethics. If your engine is in crappy condition don't waste your money on synthetics.

Message: About 40k miles on both the 2003 Dakota 4.7 and the 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 (NOT a Mitsu engine).
The 4.7 doesn't use a drop and is what I drive the hardest.
The Caravan uses a quart at about 8,000 miles or so.
I am running Amsoil 5w30 in both.

Message: Hopeful its just cleaning the motor out. i will be changing it soon. i take great care of my stuff i think what disappoints me the most about the mobile 1 in my truck is that i used it in my dirt bikes and was very happy with it. but in my truck it isn't a good match.
i bet i could get at least 200k miles out of my motor. im hard on it, but not stupid with it.
thanks for telling why you like it and giving me reason way i might be having problems.

I have been using Amsoil 5w-30 for 9 months and think it is the best oil made. My motor is quieter. I get better gas mileage. And I swear I think my motor performs better. I got the Amsoil 5w-30 for about $5 a quart because Steve the Amsoil guy on this site sold it to me for wholesale and not retail. I'm about to order the Amsoil tranny fluid and gear lubes too. All at wholesale and not retail. Much cheaper and better than Mopar.

Message: I got my 99 dakota with 26,000 miles on it. First oil change I put Mobil 1 oil and their oil filter and have not had any issues. I now have 103,000 miles on the truck now. Dyno oil after a while will leave build up in the engine. Syntetic oil will eventually "wash" the crud away exposing any bad seals. Most people don't recommend switching to syntetic unless it had low mileage.

Message: I've been using M1 for several years, no burning of oil either. You should run a cleaner in the oil to break down crud / help prevent it. I use seafoam every oil change. 1/3 in oil, 1/3 in intake and 1/3 in gas.
I'm at 59k on my current dakota (bought it with 39k) and i ran it in my old dakota, when i traded it in it had 168k miles, got 17-18 combined and never used any oil either.

Message: i just changed the oil to Quaker State high mileage and i bought a bottle of slick 50 to add to that. i feel a slight power increase and the oil pressure is a little higher at idle. over all happy to have that Mobile stuff out of the engine.
I was helping a friend out on his 318ci dakota and i checked his oil. there was nothing on the dip stick so i asked him when was the last time he checked this? he said about "2 weeks ago." i stuck the dip stick in 7 times each time with nothing coming out on the dip stick. so i asked him when was the last time you changed it? "December" i was shocked that this motor hasn't blown up yet. we got him to go buy some oil and change it. it had less than 3qts in it.
this guy over revs this motor all day long. and he was driving around with the truck over heat for more than a week. and that was all on that oil.
A. castrol GTX, tough oil?
B. 318ci, extremely tough design?
C. both are built for the extreme?
Answer?

Tool, whatcha doin to ya dang truck?
A high mileage oil is too thick and you should
only use it in engines with seal leak problems.
Slick 50 is snake oil and has been sued by the
U.S. Govt. for false advertising and lying.
