Message: I've used a temp probe to check temperatures both along side the radiator and at the fender well opening. With the flap removed from the side of the radiator the temp is just five degrees above ambient temp. With the probe just inside the fender well it is plus an additional five degrees.
At a stop the temp rises faster at the fender and decreases more slowly when accelerating than it does along side the radiator. For the most part I found that the differences are more academic and mean very little in day to day performance.
I rerouted my intake air to the side of the radiator for the simple reason that I chose to mount my MSD in the fender well opening where the MSD stays cooler. I see little reason to chose one location over the other. It is totally a matter of preference.
As to whether or not to use a K&N performance filter, it is more a matter of why. If you want maximum performance at WOT then the choice is obvious, the K&N is capable of flowing more air. Of course it is also capable of flowing more dirt. In that case it is also the size and type of dirt it will allow to pass. It will not allow any form of silica, which is the most abrasive type of dirt, to pass.
My personal preference is the K&N drop in filter. While I get 17-19 mpg I don't attribute any of that to the filter. It's due for a good cleaning but I think I'll do a paper filter first just to get a comparison. I've also run an open filter which seems to be a toss up because it takes in air that is up to fifty degrees warmer.

Message: Interesting. I think when you sit at a light, it would have to be MROE than 5 degrees over ambient ANYWHERE under the hood that exposed to the heat of the engine and radiator.
I haven't taken a temperature in a while.
Once it got HOT this summer, remember I am in the AZ Valley, I noted from a dead stop my truck actually PINGED slightly! That was with the filter next to the radiator taking air from beside it.
I put the stock filter box back on and used DEATH TAPE to seal the intake to the fender opening. I should be getting the coldest air I could get now.
On some old car projects, I've actually put scoops in the hood and sealed it to blow through a filter box. Those were the ONLY times I felt any noticable change!

Message: i have one of those old school air cleaner things that sit ontop of the engine, i have also flipped the air cleaner top upside down and i do notice that when i open my exhaust cutout it sounds different, in a bad way, it doesnt sound nearly as good
so i jsut hooked it back up with the tube that runs down to the front of the grill and popped the cover off that so its kinda sorta an almsot ram air
it works, but now i get bugs stuck in my filter

Message: I have a 14x3 air cleaner on my 98 5.2L Dak, I put it on a while after installing Autolite 3923's which got rid of all the pinging, so even with the hotter air there is no pinging, even in 100+ ambient temp. The filter flows a greater volume of air so even though it's hot it still adds a lot of power. Plus I love the look and price of it.
