Message: I'm going to change the automatic transmission fluid/filter in my 2001 Dakota (4x4) and I haven't been able to find the amount of fluid I'll need. How much do I need to get the job done?
Thanks,
Brandon

Message: I just did my 02 4.7 auto tranny and tranfer case, used nearly all of 2 1/2 gals., also not sure if the 01 is the same, but there are 2 filters in my trans, the flat one and a spin on which apparently is a dealer only item in my area. The transfer case takes about 1 1/2qts.
Have fun.

Message: I just did my '01 4X4. It took 14 qts and the filters are available at Napa stores.

Message: Thanks for the info on the amount needed! I bought a filter kit from NAPA, and it didn't include the spin on filter. Can NAPA supply it, or do I need to go to a dealer? A part number (for NAPA or the dealer) would be handy, since the local NAPA folks aren't very helpful anymore. Kinda sad!

Message: If you plan on doing a flush of the transmission, it will be about 16 qts (14+2). If you just dropped the pan, it would probably be about 7 I'm guessing. Usually just dropping the pan doesn't drain the torque converter and the rest of what is in the system at the time. Probably wouldn't hurt just to buy 14 qts and have some spares on your shelf. Make sure you buy something that is ATF +4 compatible. If you want your tranny to last even longer and possibly gain some mpg and/or horsepower, you may want to consider switching to a synthetic. I had mine flushed because it still had ATF +3 in it and was causing slipping issues.
You should be able to get both filters from Napa. Many of the "Filter kits" are just the flat filter with the pan gasket and not the spin on filter. Some do have both filters though. I bought both my filters for my 2000 Dak at Advance Autoparts.

Message: Napa Part numbers for filters
1-8594 ATP Filter Kit (I assume this is the flat filter with the gasket, I did not use the gasket I used RTV)
1-8593 ATP Filter (I assume this is the spin on filter, I don't have the boxes anymore to verify)
This is for the 45RFE Tranny

Message: Just wanted to thank all for the advice. Got all the filters ordered from NAPA, and will pick up about 8 quarts of Valvoline at the same time. I'm just going to drop the pan and not a whole flush.

Message: I just got an 02 dakota in jan and I have not done anything with the tranny yet. But on my old 95 there were 2 types of kits for tranny (gasket and filter). One was a cork type gasket and one a rubber type gasket. I highly recommend the rubber type. Not sure if this applies to the later model dakotas or not.
might be worth a check. Does anyone here know if that's the case?

Message: The Amsoil site lists the fluid capacities for most every car. On my 02 I usually use 9 qts of fluid with a pan drop (I've done it twice now).
I see you've ordered your filters, but www.bulkpart.com has, or had, the best prices on the filters. You will need the flat pan filter, the spin-on filter, and an O-ring for the pan filter. I replaced the O-ring once and re-used it once, so you can decide if you want to buy it.
I also used the Amsoil Universal ATF both times. Definitely not a difficult job, but get ready for a mess.... :-)

Message: Whoops, one more thing on the gasket. On the first pan drop, I used a rubber gasket that I purchased from bulkpart. It was "weep-leaking" from the time it was installed. Now, it never did lose enough that I needed to add any fluid, nor did it drip onto the garage floor, but it definitely was weeping down the pan.
For the second pan drop, I just used some Right-Stuff, and it appears to be holding fine.
