I used to get 15, 16 highway and then i changed my plugs, put in a 180 stat in and changed the radiatior fluid and then i found that i was getting around 11-12mpg. I kept a close watch on my mileage befor and noticed the drop soon as i changed everything. I don't know if it could be the stat or maybe the plugs are not the best for my 5.2 So i'm wonding what is the best plug for my 97 5.2? Also if it makes any differnce I have headers, flowmaster catback and k&n filter and JET chip which i did notice incresed my mileage when i put it on a couple of months ago. Thanks

First - Check all of your connections. Check your sparkplug gaps!

Sparkplugs are very opinionated;
Speedtweaks recommends autolite 3923 sparkplugs,
Dodge recommends Champion
I use Bosch Platinum 4

Have you ever changed out you distributor rotor & cap and your spark plug wires. Over time these items will fail to perform the way they should.

Another way to improve your gas mileage would be to add an multi-spark ignition system. The first one that comes to mind would be MSD 6a because that is what I use. You will gain around 3 mpg. If you use a multi-spark system I would also suggest using a high output coil and MSD 8.5mm.

Have you reset your PCM since installing the
thermostat?
The may be confused due to the lower temperature
it sees in the engine. Eventually, the computer
will "re-learn". However, resetting the PCM
should eliminate some of your problems.

Thanks for the great info!

marc 99 R/T I was wondering if those plugs and mods would be the same for a SLT 5.2 opposed to the R/T 5.9?

BB2Dak I was wondering how i would go about resetting the PMC

To reset your PCM:
Disconnect the negative battery cabel from the battery. Turn your key over and hold it to the crank position for 15 seconds. This completely discharges all electricity from the system. Reconnect your battery. You will need to reset your clock and radio presets and whatnot.

I reset mine quite often. Its the first thing I do every time there is a problem with the way my truck runs.

I recently had my PCM flashed by the Dealer and notice a big decrease in gas mileage about 60mile on a tank of gas. Will this improve over time or am I doomed by a change in my computers programing?
