Subject: Noise on Acceleration
IP: Logged

Message:
My truck just started making a metallic rattling/creaking noise from under the vehicle on fairly hard acceleration (1/2 throttle or more). It's an '04 QC 4.7 4x4 with 39K miles. Anyone have any suggestions where to start looking or had a similar problem?

Thanks,
Scott

Tell your dealer to check the under warranty smog system.

Your U-Joints might be bad...mine started making that noise at like 54k and I replaced them and the truck was like brand new again.

A metallic rattling can be anything from a loose heat shield to u-joints. Creaking can be dry bushings or something else. My 99 Dak had a rattling noise and it turned out to be a broken gear in the rear end. But that noise was all the time, not just on acceleration.

My truck makes noise out the tailpipe when the engine is running. Is this normal?

No, because you drive a hybrid it should only sound like a vacuum cleaner.

Thanks for the responses. I've been all over under that thing and found nothing loose or rubbing. I'm leaning towards Dakotasports U-joint suggestion. I don't see any rust coming out of them but I think I'll pull the prop today and see what they feel like. Naturally the warranty has just expired.

They say not to get pushed into getting an extended warranty by the dealer, but I'm glad I did now. I would have had to pay a lot out of my pocket if I didn't on my 99 Dak. Besides gears breaking in the rear end ( I don't race my truck ) the AC has gone out and the intake manifold had to be replaced. I just bought a used 2001 Durango R/T and got an extended on that too. So glad because after less than 100 miles the tranny had to be rebuilt. Remind me not to buy another used car. LOL

It was the rear U-joint, had one cup starting to seize. Man, what an ordeal getting the flange bolts out, I had to heat them up with a propane torch to soften up the Loctite. I happened to have a U-joint on hand that fit so it didn't really cost anything but my time and one bloody knuckle.

Thanks to all for your help,
Scott
