Message: I'm still fighting to reduce my excessive mpg(12mpg-citi,16mpg-hgwy)I was today in the shop.Mechanic did a computer test.No error was found, however he found something.O2 sensor which is at the end of right catalityc converter(muffler side) seems to not work.On LCD computer display ,all four o2 sensors are showed as a frequently moving bars.Only this one doesn't move.Guys in the shop say that this o2 sensor is not responsible for fuel consumption. They say also that probably sensor is OK ,but catalitic converter is clogged. Are they right? What would You suggest to do?

Of course the O2 sensor adjusts the mixture. The computer reads the differance between the gasses before entering the catalytic converter and upon exit, and based on the amount of O2 adjusts the mixture.
Your catalytic converter can almost instantly turned to junk by leaded gasoline.
If it was plugged you would have little power, but miles per gallon would not be affected because the computer would compensate by adjusting the mixture.
A good garage or muffler shop has equipment to check the flow. I know, you're in Europe.
I believe you are in luck; that is the cheaper of the sensors.
Finally, unless your exhaust is welded or so rusted it's impossible; pull the damn exhaust apart before the catalytic converter, fill the tank, drive around sounding like a Tank for a day, fill er up again, calculate your mileage and see if there is a change.

Message: Shatto,I don't follow.if I will pull apart the exhaust, the suspected sensor will stay in its place. What a difference it makes?
I have four o2 sensors. Two at a front of catalitic converters and two at the end of each. This end one is a suspect.

Message: Sorry, I am in the habit of thinking 6, like mine. I only have one sensor on either side of the catalyc converter.
What I was talking about was based on my experience of having the innerds of the catalytic converter removed after it was broken by backfiring. The pipe came out by itself and I drove through San Francisco for much of the day NOISY!
I presume your system then runs into one exhaust pipe. In any event my cheapie idea would be too difficult on your truck. Would have been a simple way to see if there was a loss due to blocked exhaust.
Seems the simplest thing is replacing the sensor.
Is there another Dakota you can borrow one from, to test the theory?

Wrong. The downstream O2 sensor is only there to compare the richness of exhaust before and after the catcon, to determine if the catcon is working. If the mixture is the same upstream as down, it trips a catcon failure code. The downstream O2 sensor does not control mixture. So likely it does need replacement.

Message: Also the downstream sensor has very little to no movement when hot and operating correctly - which it shouldn't IF the cat is good and working correctly.

So get a new one, only $40 for an NGK.
Tell us how much for the NGK in Poland.

So many problems .... So little time

Message: One thing is sure. Both are working different way.
The point is how to recognize the bad one?I would avoid to buy two, because they are different-lenght of cable with connector.
By now I found them on rockauto at 25 bucks. So,there is no disaster.Today I will check local prices as well.

Message: The one that moves, either is bad or that mini cat is bad.
They should move like the upstream one (only trailing it slightly) UNTIL the O2 AND cat get hot. Then the downstream should be fairly steady.
