Subject: Need help with tranny! IP: Logged
Message: Yesterday out of the blue the transmission in my 96 4X4 started acting strange. The truck seems like it starts out in 2nd or 3rd. If I pull it down to 1st it will pull like it should. As I shift to 2nd there is no change, but as I put it in drive everything works as it should until I come to another stop. I'm beginning to think this truck is cursed. Since I got it ln late December the following has happened to it: hood flies up, develops an exhaust leak, water puddles in passenger floorboard after heavy rain, gets hit in the left front corner, and now the tranny....

Message: if the engine isn't timed right the tranny will act funny. if you're idling is off, as an indicator, so is the tranny operation. check distributor components and such just to make sure. then trouble shoot the tranny issue.
other things to check... throttle position sensor, throttle cable linkage. change all ATF fluid and filter.
let me know if this helps.

Message: Before you jump in knee deep, Check all yoir electrical connections on your trany. seperate them and put back together. Also e sure to check the ground wires. Check all Vacumn hoses. Pull the dipstick and check for burned smell and if it's full or not. Did you check for codes. If by now it isn't shifting correctly, I myself would drop the pan. think your next step is going to involve selinoids or a check valve in your valve body. The fact that your saying it happened quickly tells me it is most likely one of the things I have mentioned.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Thanks guys for the advice. I will be trying your suggestions over the next few days as I have time. I'm really hoping this turns out to be something simple as I don't have the $$$ for a tranny or rebuild!

Message: I had the same problem with my trans a few months ago. I was expecting to have to get it overhauled, but it turns out there's a pressure solenoid and switch that needed replacing. About $250 parts/labor. Been running fine since.
This occurred right after getting the trans flushed so I tried draining and refilling with ATF+4 from Dodge; made no difference.
