Has anyone used the K&N Oil Filter? I have seen them the last couple of times I purchased oils filters, but I was wondering if they really are worth the price tag?

I just purchased one and put it on this weekend. It says there is more flow, thus increasing performance. I don't feel any difference but maybe its made better or maybe i just wasted my money lol.

I used to use Fram but after putting the first WIX filter on (actually a NAPA Gold, made by WIX), I saw a definite increase in my oil pressure gauge. NAPA Gold ran me about $5; how much for the K&N?

i dont know about more power but if you read the specs of a fram vs. a k&n or Mobil 1 filter you can do the math.

a fram filters particles to about 30-40 microns or bigger. k&n and mobil 1 filter particles about 10-20 micron.

therefore, k&n and mobil 1 will keep your oil cleaner longer.

if you are useing dino oil every 3000 miles you may not get a significant benefit.

if you are running a quality synthetic oil like mobil 1 that is supposed to last 5-7000 miles then you would see a real benefit from a k&n or mobil 1 filter.

i use a k&n with mobil 1 synthetic oil. at 5,000 miles my oil is dark brown but feels like it only has a 1,000 miles of use.

Hey , Thanks guys. I think I will go with a less expensive filter that does the same! Yes I am using 'Dinooil'! I have a 105k on the engine and have never put synthetic in it. I was told once that if you switch from a conventional to a synthetic, the gaskets and seals will leak! So i am stuck with conventional oil!

Not necessarily true Brett. But if you feel safer with Dino oil, stick with it. My Dak had 32k when I bought and the original owner used dino oil. I switched to SynBlend and have yet to have any problem and I have 92k on it now. Really doesn't matter if it's dino or syn, as long as you perform the oil/filter changes as recommended or sooner, you're doing allright.

Lucas...YES, increased oil pressure is a good thing. Listen to how worried NASCAR crew chiefs get when the driver reports a decrease in oil pressure during a race.

500,000 origonal miles on my 98 3.9 automatic.
I use Amsoil lubricants, Amsoil by-pass filter and do a lab analysis of the oils every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.
My filters are mounted behind the cab under the bed. The system is now 7 quarts.
The new Amsoil Ea Bypass Filter cleans down to 2 microns. The old one 3 microns.
The Ea is rated for 30,000 miles between changes.

if your using dino oil. just use a NAPA Gold (which is a WIX filter)filter or a puroltor plus filter. beings you change the oil every 3,000. you will be losing money on the M-1 filter.

as far as the miles on your engine. I will say this. you could develope a leak or you wont. I have seen peopel with over 150,000 miles and switched over to synthectic and no probs. while others switched at less than 50,000 miles and leak all over the plasce. a guy on line with a silverado and think its the 6.1L V-8. has less than 10,000 miles on it and tried synthectic and it leaked on him.

so I start with with a syn blend for a few OIC. prob about 3 or 4. to get all the build up you have from the dino oil. then try full syntectic.

but if your not looking to go 10,000 + miles on OIC just stick with dino and be happy.

My guess is someone told you syn makes your gaskets and seals leak. In reality, If you have a leak already it may leak a bit worse with syn And I actually doubt that to. I run syn in a 79 toyota pickup for 6 years before selling it to my brother-in-law. He drove it 90 miles 5 or 6 days a week two work for another 5 years before he sold it. Now the kicker is, I bought that truck with 145,000 on it. Sold it at 230,000 plus and brother-in-law sold it at well over 300,000 miles > All MOBIL 1 10-30 syn miles With MOBIL 1 FILTERS and never leaked a drop nor did it use any. Syn isn't needed according to a lot of dino users but myself I wouldn't even consider using dino. Syn costs more but not near the price of an engine. I know there are lots who will flame this writing but you'll never convince me to change my mind.

So many problems .... So little time

so the guy with a silerado with a million miles on it. all he did was 3,000 miles OIC with dino oil. his truck ran fine.

dino oil is better than years ago. the only plus side of syn is you can go as far sa 15,000 miles on syn. where as with dino. I seen people push 7500 miles. flame you no but syn can start a leak that was plugged by the buildup dino can create around seals. as syn acts like a cleaning agent and will break down the buildup and will show if you have any leaks. its good that you like syn but dont call dino bad. most problems people has with dino is caused by them selves. by not doing reg OIC and thinking they can leave it in as long as syn. or not check their PCV. or listen to car manufacturers like VW when they said they can run dino for 7500 miles and people got sludge because of that.

so dino is good but synthectics are the best. but dino will not harm your engine. human error can only harm it lol.

The multi-pass on a Fram PH3600 oil filter is 94%. The multi-pass on a Purolator oil filter of the same size is 96%

What is the K&N?

BTW, don't worry about dino oil vs. synthetic. If you can fit it in your budget, get synthetic and run it good and hard for 5,000 miles. It still gets dirty just like dyno, but it doesn't break down.

I've heard this too--- what weight do you use now? I assume 5W-30 or 10W-30. If you're like me when I used to use dino, you're using 10W-40! But switching to synthetic doesn't mean disaster. Synthetic is rated different than dino. Most times the highest weight protection you will see of Mobil 1 is 10W-30. No 40 weight at operating temperature! Maybe you could get some of the benefits of syn without totally ditching dino. Try making your own blend: 1 quart Valvoline Syn-Power 10W-30 and 4 quarts Castrol 10W-40 dino oil.

I had the cheapest Purolator on it. Drove for 100 miles and changed to the pricey K & N, I felt no difference in performance. But who knows maybe the K & N will hold up longer or filter more crap out. i just don't find spending that much more on it is worth it.

I usually buy Fram because that "sure grip" really comes in handy. But I recently went to PepBoys because they had Purolator oil filters on sale... get this... after the mail in rebate (which they sent me in the form of a gift card), each filter only costs ONE CENT!!! So I bought 2 purolators and was only out TWO PENNYS!!! Can't beat that kinda deal!
