Subject: Strange clunk sound in Transfer case IP: Logged
Message: Hello All,
I've got an issue with my 99 Dakota Sport 4X4 5spd 117,000 miles. This last week after driving to MD from NJ I started hearing almost a tin\chirping sound from the front end seems to be on the passenger side. After this, snowed today and when engaged in 4 Wheel drive a clunk sound comes from the transfer case. Disengage 4 wheel sound stays for about a minute. I can feel it when it clunks all the way to the shifter. Help!!!

Message: Nope...thought they would when servicing at Dealership. As far as U joints replaced them once before this sound doesn't sound like them, at least not what I have heard them sound like. Also today after the wet weather that chirping sound went away. It only starts when around 35-40 MPH and is constant at that point (dry). I have it scheduled to be looked at tomorrow at a local shop not the local dealer. I am just hoping its not to bad of news can't afford a new one yet..

Message: I have the same year model truck as you. when i bought my truck at 60,000 miles from the dealer the transfer case was almost empty! it had a small leak and still does, i filled it and all was good after that. check it to see whats in there before more damage occurs.

Message: Thanks, I just heard from the Tech at the garage I went to. He said he checked all the fluid levels and all seemed fine, however he did find that the passenger side ball joint was shot...He is still going to test drive to hear the Transfer case sound

Message: I have 96' dakota sport and had the same noise. The mechanic said the chain in the case was jumping the sprocket, I had to replace the whole unit. I found one used for 750.00. Truck had 123,000 on when it went out. Hope you have better luck.

Message: Well so far so good it has only cost me $160 parts and labor for the ball joint. Apparently the drive shaft that goes to the front is bent on the end. That is what the Mech thinks caused the rattle in 4X4. I'm waiting for the part to come in on monday. He has that disengaged so even when I put it in 4H the front doesn't engage and at least there is no grinding which I guess means the Transfer case is ok.

Message: Well the drive shaft was fixed at as cost of $280 so with labor it was about $320. Not to bad I guess and the clunk is gone.....
