Message: I know this is a dakota sight, but I was hoping that someone might have some ideas about a problem that my wife's car is having. It's a '99 intrepid, with the 2.7 engine. The car seems to be burning oil pretty badly, but I had a mechanic look at it, and he couldn't figure out where the oil was going. The engine has high miles, but it was partially rebuilt, because of sludge, so it only has about 20,000 miles on it since that time. We just recently had the timing set replaced, because aparantly the drop in oil pressure caused the timing in the chain to go out, because of the hydraulic tensioner. Since the car was bought less than a year ago, there's been over $1000 invested in the engine already. The dealership where we bought it from, kept replacing parts that failed, because of a larger problem, but never solved the problem. The warranty is now out. It wasn't a Chrysler dealership, it was privately owned. Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: Your problem is nothing new. The 2.7 is a sludger. I doubt very much the engine was anywhere near to being properly cleaned out during the partial rebuild. I'm betting the veins in the engine are either still or again partially plugged causing starvation problems to all the upper engine moving parts. Cam, pistons, valve train, you name it. If you have no external leaks I'd be taking a real close look at valve seals as these are a serious problem in that engine. Right or wrong one thing I can tell you without question > You will never see the day you will stop dumping monry into that 2.7 if your planing on keeping it. Good lock

Message: All chrysler 2.7's should be melted down to make something else. I doesnt matter how many mile they have on them. My freind works on them and has seen one with 3 thrown rods with only 17 miles on the car. Yes 17 miles.

Message: The last time we had the dealership work on the car, they put a different set of heads on it, because of the valves being bent. The car was being driven about 50 mph when the timing chain blew up through the plastic cover over the chain. The chain was broke in two places, the pulley came off the water pump, and the tensioner was bad, for the third time. As I said, parts keep failing, but there seems to be a larger problem. Perhaps the valves seals were bad in the replacement heads, because they were used, not new.

Message: the 2.7 is a very well built engine contrary to what you hear. The reason they sludge is because they have no tolerance for lack of maintenance. If you keep the oil changed they're happy.
First thing I would do is pull the spark plugs and see if there is any evidence of oil fouling.

Message: Everyone I talk to says that the 2.7 is a good engine, it's just very important to keep a good filter on it, and to use quality oil. I drive a '98 dakota, and it's had it's share of problems, but I still think it's a good truck. The valve seals make sense, because it didn't use any oil, until the other heads were put on. Is there a way to know if the valve seals are going bad, with out tearing it apart?

Message: The 2.7 is a mitsu design and as such has design flaws.
I am an ex. chrysler tech so know full well the filter and oil change routine, changed my wifes every 3 months and at 60k the dreaded oil light, overheat, etc.
AS long as they never overheat and you change oil every 2-3k max with good oil, the engine may last. You would have thought this brilliant design would have died with the 2.6 - that is where is came from :(
I own a Pontiac now and hope my dakota lasts forever - though it has had a few issues. Sad cause I was a die hard Chry. guy.
This problem is so well known that most aftermarket warranties WILL NOT warranty any car with a 2.7 in it.

Message: I dare you to find a 2.7 with over 100,000 miles with no engine work. I doubt you will find one. My friend had one with Three different tensiors that collapsed. On went 5,000 miles, busted, threw the valves into the pistons. Then second one lasted 13 miles, and threw the a couple valves through the piston. So he changed out the pistons and kept the orignal rings since it only had 6000 on it. Third one is still on but not likely to last. It is a 0 tollerence engine. so the slightest over rev could break it into a million pieces.

Message: The car is paid off, so I'm hoping that it'll last another 1 1/2 years until I'm finished with school, but if there's any way to know if the valve seals are bad, with out tearing it apart, I'd really appreciate any input. Thanks again.

Message: Run the car till totally warmed up. At least 20 miles. Park it for the night > Watch the ezhaust at next day start up > If you see smoke you got bad valve seals. Got a really long steep hill you can desend at highway speed without using the gas AT ALL ? At the bottom hit the gas > Blue smoke? Most likely valve seals

Message: If you can do a head gasket you can do valve seals. In fact, you should do valve seals anytime you do a head gasket. Just makes sense and they usually come in a kit.
