Message: Having owned two Oldsmopiles ('79 and '82) with the diesel engine I'd nominate that one. It was basically a gas 4.3L and 5.7L V8 engine converted to run with diesel instead of gas. (And boy was that 4.3L engine gutless - my '87 Jetta puts out more power than that did.)
The injector pumps were crap. There was a urathane bushing inside of it that connected/cushioned the rotating pump assembly. The heat and fuel would deteriorate this bushing until it broke into little pieces that then would get stuck in the outgoing fuel return's check ball valve. When this plugged up the internal pump pressure would rise to the point where it no longer could feed the injectors. Stopped dead on the road.
A quick fix was to remove the check ball valve, use a nail and hammer/rock/etc. to bash out the glass ball in the fitting. Now there was no way for it to plug up, but now the internal fuel pump pressure wasn't regulated properly. It ran, but very badly.
Head gaskets couldn't hold up to the cylinder pressure. They would eat through and you'd need a gasket replacement often before 70K miles.
The bottom end wasn't strong enough to go much past 100K miles before eating through a rod bearing. I was in Perris, TX in the 1979 Cutlass with a rod that had been knocking for the past 300 miles. All of a sudden the rod blew out the block. Amazing thing was the engine was still running. I shut it down about a minute later, oil and coolant were running down the road...

Message: My vote's the 3 liter V6 that my parents' 1983 Buick Century T-type had. At 80k miles the original engine was shot and the replacement only went 40k miles. It only had about 100 HP.
I have a Popular Hot Rodding issue where they picked the 10 worst V8's. IIRC the engines included a 1917 Chevy, the V8-6-4 Cadillac, a few late 70's/early 80's Ford and Chevy small-blocks, a turbocharged Pontiac, and the Oldsmobile diesels. I don't recall there being a Mopar on the list though!

Message: I'm talking about the Oldsmopile 4.3L diesel. Basically a reworked edition of the Chevy 4.3L V8 engine you are talking about. It had 90HP and no acceleration.
(Man did it have itty-bitty pistons!)

my vote is the 2.6 mitsubichi motor put in dodges (non-turbo).

Also anything made by honda or toyota. 99% of the time someone is in such a big hurry to pull out in front of me and not go anywhere, it's a honda or toyota. Those drivers always over estimate the power of their vehicles. Then there's the ricers. The think those engines are too cool. :P

Message: My vote for longest lasting engine is the 225 slant six. Had a '72 Duster and a '71 Dart both equipped with that engine and the engines just kept going and going.... Not real big on power, but very reliable.
I had those cars in High School twenty years ago.....with the price of 'A' body Mopars now, I wish I still had them! ~sniff~

Message: i agree with some of you with the longest longevity 225 slant 6. had a 72 valiant w/265k on it. the reason why i think it lasted so long because it did not have enough power to blow it self up. the worst would be gm 3.8l v6 before they reworked it into the grand national.you would be lucky to get 50k before all the oil would run out of it.another candidate would be fords carbed 2.3l (what a pig).although i had a 79 2.3l mustang with the turbo and 4spd(that had 200hp and the car weighed 2200lbs).you could burn alot of rubber with that engine.

Message: the slant six was supposes to be casted out of aluminum but was casted out of cast iron. the thing doesn't have enough power to strain it self.
i read that it was suppose to be a performance engine but than the block was casted out of cast iron and the compression was really low.
and some mods to slow it down!
