Subject: Synthetic Oil??? IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking about changing over to synthetic oil when I change my oil next. What do I need to do if anything for this? Also what gains if any should I expect to see? Do I need to buy a special oil filter? Sorry for all the questions.

Message: First thing is to make sure your motor has at least 3000 to 4000 miles on it before you make the switch over, the only synthetic oil I recommend is MOBIL 1,it is proven,I wouldnt waste my time with synthetic blends either,if your going to make the switch, make the switch right?Stay away from penzol synthetic,it has penzine in it that has been proven to start leaks in the oil seals.Use Mobil 1 5W30 or 10W30 tri synthetic motor oil with a mobil 1 oil filter, change the oil every 3000 to 5000 miles, its up to you,I change it every 3000,but you can push it to 5000 if you want. There is nothing special to do for the switch over, just change it like you would any other time,if you have more than 12000 miles on your Dak I would recommend to change it over, then change it again in 1500 miles then go back to regular intervals, this cleans all of your old oil and sludge out.Expensive yes,but it is the right way to do it.The gain to be had is a few more ponies, maybe a little more gas mileage but the biggy is the life of the engine, synthetic lubes all the bearings in a engine better, keeps the inside clean too, regular oil turns into sludge inside the engine. What motor do you have anyway?Good luck to you,and stay away from trans and rearend synthetics, these do more bad than good at this point.

Message: I have used Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec and notice no difference between the two. I would recommend that you first use a synthetic blend to clean out your engine and then switch to full synthetic. This is the route I have always used and is also what a couple of my buddy's who are mechanics recommend

Message: Check the archive!!! This subject has been discussed in great detail atleast 3-4 times in the last 5 months. Do not waste your time at mobile 1 site. It will only be useful to you if you know nothing about synthetic oil. Redline raceing oil and Amsoil have much better sites. Their is also the motor oil bible . Basicly you want to pick a name brand synthetic oil; Mobile 1, Havoline, Exxon, Pensoil, Valvoline, RedLine, Amsoil or NEO........ Get it in 10W30 and pick up a decent filter AC/Delco, Napa Gold, PureOne, Hastings,K&N,Baldwin, or Mobile One. Stay away from Fram Fram is junk.

Message: Hi again Brian, trust me buddy, you dont want to do that, dont put straight 50W in a newer engine,I have a 1969 318 that has never been rebuilt and has 112,000 original miles on it and I run 15W50 MOBIL 1 oil and filter and in the morning with the cold start,65 psi of oil pressure, and hot idle it only goes down to 19 or 20 psi.Your 318 should run with nothing more than 10W30 synthetic.Trust me,if you put anything heavier in it all you will do is burn it because the rings in your motor dont have the squeegy action needed to scrape all the thick oil off the cylinder walls,it will pass the rings and burn, build carbon deposits, lower gas mileage and performance. If you dont know a good mechanic, call up someone like Summit racing's or mopar performance's tech line and ask them the same questions,I'll put money down that they will give you the same answers I am giving you.

Message: While I have ran20w 50 wt in alot of chevys with no problem I would rather run a 10w40 synthetic or a 15w50 synthetic. You will get about the same protection with alot less drag from the heavy oil. You can buy single wt synthetic oils. If you live in a place where it stays warm year round and you have to have a thick oil a company called NEO Synthetics make a product called 570. It is a single high viscosity oil designed for NASCAR use in big motors turning more then 9000RPM and it has a complete additive package for street use.

Message: Jacob,
In my opinion the Mobil-1 and the Lubrication Engineers 10w-30 are the best oils for your engine. The Mobil-1 can be purchased anywhere and the LE oil is not on the market to the general public. It is marketed to fleets only. The LE oil is a 70% synthetic and 30% petro oil that has a very robust additive package. The LE oil is known as a heavy duty oil for extended oil drains with less wear than the Mobil-1 product. The oxidation resistance is about the same (both are very high in oxidation resistance). If you are interested in purchasing the LE product I could point you in the right direction.

Message: Hello all, The next step in oil will be the phaseing of current conventional oil from the market place and a new conventional oil will replace. It is called hydrocracked. There is hydrocracked II and hydrocracked III. If I read the article right Hydrocracked III will give alot of the benifits of synthetic oil but will cost about the same as current conventional oil. This would be perfect for those of use that do not do exteneded drain intervales and it will be even better for makeing a good synthetic blend while keeping cost down.Alot of synthetic have solvencey problems.

Message: My whole fleet ('97 Blazer 4x4, '92 Chevy G-20 Van, '94 S-10) all with well 100k run on Mibil 1 15w-30. Just bought a '93 3.9L, 5 speed DAK with only 70K & it will get the same.
Talked to someone at Mobile years ago and he said they can only advertize to follow mfg's recommendations but if warranty isn't in the picture 8,000-10,000 between changes was OK.
I've comprimised a little, & change the filter @ 3-5,000 & oil/filter @ 6-8,000.

Message: I have a 1994 Chrysler LHS, 3.6l V6. It has
335,000 miles on the original engine. It has had
Mobil 1 since 50k, or for the last 285,000 miles.
I change the oil at approx 3k to 3500 miles. At
this interval, it uses no oil, runs great, and
the rocker arms (at the oil fill hole) are very
clean and like new !! I highly recommend it !
Mobil 1 is the best oil in the general marketplace that money can buy ---- that is why
all the performance and high-end manufacturers use it as factory fill. With the new extended
performance Mobil 1, I may go to 5k change
intervals. Also, consider Mobil 1 automatic
transmission fluid for Dexron/Mercon application.
