Subject: DID YOU EVER HEAR A ROLLER CAMSHAFT IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I would love to hear everyones comments who have replaced there roller cam in there 5.9 or 5.2. I just replaced the roller cam and lifters in my 5.2 dakota.(STOCK LIFT AND DURATION) It runs super and better than ever. My question is that the factory roller was very quiet. I put in a federal mogul/sealed power cam and lifters, and when you drive truck and buzz motor up above 2,500 rpm I think I can actually hear the roller cam. This noise was never there before. And I know Iam not hearing things. Love to hear comments on this,Thanks.

Message: I agree with the first comment (not the second). Now that you've broken things in a little, go back and re-adjust the rockers. You may have to shim or shave to get the correct setting.

Message: I have the factory rockers. They are not adjustable. Even if the rockers are worn I should of heard this sound I think with the old cam. But the old cam was hammered though and the motor was ticking the rockers then. It isnt a bad sound it actually sounds kinda neat when going thru the gears. You only hear it 2,500 rpm and above. I wanted to see if any of you guys ever heard this before.

Message: is the replacement cam factory specs (hard to tell from your first post)? and are you reusing the rest of the valvetrain from when the "cam was hammered"

Message: Cam is factory spec. What I did do is spin at about 300 rpm and clean every push rod to check and make sure they were still nice and true and not bent or bowed in anyway. They all spun very nice. The tips of all the valves looked very nice to. When the motor started ticking I did not wait to long to take it down. The rockers all looked good to. I did not see any signs of wear. Do you think it is possible that when I torqued the rockers down the ones that put pressure on the valves did not give me a good reading and I should go back and redo? Ever heard of that happening before?

Message: Valve spring pressure will have nothing to do with bolt torque readings. Bolt torque is a measurement of "torsion" or "twisting" of the bolt being tightened, not the amount of pressure being exerted along the length of the bolt. Good Luck!

Non-adjustable rocker were installed to speed up the manufacturing process. They didn't want to have to spend time properly adjusting the valves on the assembly line. However, as time goes on and miles go by, wear occurs in small amounts you can't see. Now there's slop in the valve train, and it's noisy.
Go to the Crane Cams or Comp Cams web site and read the tech article on hydraulic valve adjustment. Basically, you set the valves to zero lash, and then add 1/2 turn. If you can't do that with your engine you'll need to make some changes.
You can shave off the pedestal a little. It can be done with the heads installed if you're very carefull about controlling the shavings. You won't get it exactly right, but then you can use shims for the valve adjustment. Without a milling machine, they will not be flat.
Or you can buy push rods that are slightly longer - like .050 - and then use shims as needed. This is the preferred method.
Or you can just blow it off and drive it as is. ;)

Message: i have had to remove valve cover on a 4.7 dodge dakota 2003 . when doing so i noticed that 6 rockers were laying in the bottom of the head i then proceded to slide them back in but i found they were very loose in place ...
