Subject: TIPS ON DAKOTA LIFTER INSTALL IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a 95 dakota with 5.2lt. v-8. It has the roller cam lifters in it. Can I sneak the lifters out thru the valve cover area with the proper tool and not take off the intake manifold. I looked thru the manual and they talk about using a special tool to get them out but they are not specific on if I can leave the intake on to do this. Want to install new lifters. I know someone on site has put new lifters in there v-8 dakota before. Thanks.

Message: I recently had to do head gaskets and was in the engine. At a minimum, you would have to cut the gasket from under the heads where the pushrods come through. There is a retainer on the lifter that could easily be dropped. Access to the rear ones would be difficult because you would have to come strait in on them.
If I were you, I would take the extra time to take off the manifold. In the long run I think you will save time. It only takes about an hour to remove, and another hour to replace.
While you are in there you can check the belly pan gasket. It also gives you wide open access to change the Cap and Rotor although its not hard to get to anyways.

Message: The short answer is no. The roller lifter uses a retainer that keeps them from rotating. there is no way to remove the hold down without removing the intake.
Get a gasket set and an inch pound torque wrench and have at it.
