Message: All engines crack heads. The 426 Hemi has an issue with cracks in the extremely thin area between the valves. Yet, it's considered one of the greatest engines ever. So no, the 360 doesn't deserve a "worst engine" award for this.

Message: The 318 and 360 use the same head? Yes and no. They have the same design, but usually the 360 head has bigger ports and larger combustion chambers, but are model year contingent. Also, in many instances, the 360 has bigger valves. This is true in LA form, which is the most common 360 form, not Magnum. It is true that all heads will crack under the right conditions. I have neve cracked a SB Mopar head.

Message: im shootin for the premag 3.9 V6s. especially the pre 1988s that were carbureted. connect them to a 904 auto and personally the worst motor / tranny combo....
well for one, its not the tranny at all. the 904 is based off the torqueflight 727, which is one of the best designed trannys out there.
the motor is underpowered and over rated. 125 hp? what good is that? thats not enough to pull a heavy dakota. and 14mpg? whats up with that? then the carburetor is too small, and under hard excelleration, it floods itself. sure the motor is bullet proof and you can put over 250K miles on it and not worry, but its just way too weak and underpowered and a gas hog.

Message: that's usually not a problem with the size of the carb, but showing it's age.
i have a 89 dakota long bed with the 125 hp v6 and mine gets 20 mpg city and can actually get out of it's own way. I'd say it would have given my stock 98 V6 a run for it's money... and the 89 has 178K miles.
you've gotta remember that in 1988, a V8 was around 150 hp with 250 tq (2bbl 318) and a corvette was around 240 hp... but by todays standards, it's sh*tty.

Message: well ya got tires 5" bigger than stock.. so i'd expect some loss of mpg
.. and of course 4x4's will naturally get crappy mileage.
my brother got a 2001 Ram 4x4 360 and asked me what he can do to improve the mpg.. i told him to sell it.. lol

Message: 14 MPG. That's what my 2003 V8 5,000 Lb (4700 Lb stock) GenIII gets :)
hesitation is def signes of a carb needing a rebuild. Maybe also the timing could be advanced a bit.
First person I've ever heard say that was the worst engine. Maybe worst as far as what they put in trucks. And that would ONLY be comparing POWER I'd suppose.
I agree with intense on this one. Them Mitsu line of engines they stuck in everything were the WORST.
No way you could get much over 100k before one blew blue smoke form the tail pipe. And they didn't take much to warp heads on them early 3.0 V6 they stuck in the Caravan's.

Message: hes prolly right, its not the WORST motor they built, its just not my personal favorite, after dealing with it for so long. i shoulda said something more in the lines of "the 3.9 just doesnt have the balls to pull the truck, especially with bigger tires and 4wd..." and just the early ones, the mag 3.9s, no complaints at all.
and as we speak, iv run into another problem with the truck, it heats and and stalls out. the carb was rebuilt last week. (i have a post floating around the general board about this, if you want to take a look at it....)
advancing the timing couldnt hurt either prolly. any suggestions?

Message: I had two vehicles in the 1980's with 2.2 4-cyl. built in the same plant that made the B-block, as I recall. One was in a '83 Dodge Aries K wagon 5-spd., the other a '85 Dodge Mini Ram Van 5-spd. Both were carbureted, and 100 HP. A turtle with a headache would stomp 'em both, but they both made it past 100K miles reliably. My next door neighbor at he time, on the other hand, had a 1987 Dodge minivan with the Mitsubishi 3.0 V-6, which was a real SOB: dropping valves, pistons, and who knows what. The first 3.0's in '87 used in the minivans had a major oil passage in the block that was left closed in the manufacturing process!
