Subject: My Headlights Suck! IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking at some replacement headlights. My factory ones really suck, they are a white (not clear) material. Even with super bright bulbs, it's hard to see well on my way into work (2-5am).
Does anyone know a secret to cleaning the existing ones i have or should i just spend the money on new ones.
So far, I have found these at around $50/per.
My truck is a 95.

Message: Dan,
I'm guessing you have the plastic lense as that seems to be the norm for Dodge/Chrysler.
I don't have that problem on my '01 Dak, but did have that problem with the Neon I used to have. I went to Autozone or one of those places and bought some plastic cleaner. Sometimes it is called lense polish. It will normally take off most of the yellowish tint and glaze that builds up on the lenses. It worked pretty good on my neon, but didn't do a damn thing for my neighbor's car. Guess it's hit and miss. If that is the problem and not the bulb itself, you might wanna try it. Less expensive than a new one.
If not, there has got to be some better aftermarkets ones out there. Dodge plastics lenses really do suck.

Message: Polishing compound, or abrasive toothpaste with toothbrush. Lasts only for a few weeks to a few months, though. Do it just before any vehicle inspection.

Message: Me too.
I bought the Flitz, as seen on TV.
It did OK, but the plastic turned cloudy again.
Then I used wet/dry sand paper, and the Flitz again. That was better than the first time, but still not good as new.
If you get new units, let us know about the quality, etc.

Message: I tried super clean, it worked ok on the outside, a noticable improvement, but still not as clear as I'd like. I think I'll try one of the above suggestions and continue my search for new lenses. I think i'll upgrade my fog (really driving light) bulbs from 55watt to 100. That'll help :)
If anyone has replaced their stock ones, I'm open to suggestions.

Message: Mine too. I used a rubbing compound to take the cloudy scum and scratches off then used the plastic polish (Mothers) to finish.
Worked pretty well but I needed to replace one lamp due to a broken adjuster anyway, so I ordered aftermarket headlamps.
Have Silverstar replacement bulbs to go in.
