Subject: ENGINE NOISES IP: Logged
Message: Ok ive been reading some of your forum and have a question for you all
I have a 97 dakota club cab 4x4 slt with V6
My engine has been making a few noises which have been growing louder over the last year
Mainly a ticking noise from the lower front of the engine and i was wondering:
1:Has anyone else know of these noises coming from their dakotas(hope not)
2:What it might be(hope so)
SHORT STORY
Driving my dakota, hit telephone pole at about 15mph, drove it home, 6000$+ to fix, picked it up from repair, few months later ticky pingy noises.
ummm...
please help
if not need to rebuild and anyone know of any good replacement maybe preformance parts?
Steve Reeder(Tx)
thank you

Message: the timing chain on these trucks are piss poor and my guess would be that it is streched and slapping back and fourth and that is the noise that you are hearing.

Message: well the timing chain is the same as a any 318 make sure to get a double roller they will last longer the block on the magnum may need to have some material removed around the cam gear area to clearance the chain. as for the cam and lifters other than a custom grind from crane or comp i would say that you should look else where for the torque that you desire.

Message: Alternately, mine's ticking got louder a year or two ago and I took it in; had coolant in the oil. How that caused it to click is beyond me, and they didn't replace the chain. Probably a rare case, though.

Message: I have a 97 3.9 with the same ticking, listened to a friends 94 with the 3.9 same thing, My uncles 00 3.9 just starting to tick a little (its only has 8000 KM). I've talked to 2 dealer and a couple of private mechanics they all said its a dodge thing and don't worry the engine is bullet proof with proper maintenance and no abuse.
