I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with a 3.9 liter engine. I bought the truck brand new. This was the first brand new car I have ever had. My past cars were GM (Chevy and GMC). I've never had any major problems with my past cars.

Dakotas are great looking trucks so I thought I spoiled myself with a brand new Dakota. At 6000 miles my engine started knocking. I took it to the dealership and the engine was replaced. The dealership didn't even bother giving me a rental car!!! 2 weeks later the engine starts gushing out oil. Turns out the oil is leaking from the rear main seal. This time I complain to Chrysler headquarters and I get a rental for 2 days.

30,000 miles my oil is leaking again. I can't tell where it's coming from. Either the rear main seal AGAIN or the valve covers.

2 month's ago my o2 sensor goes out. Last week I get 2 codes P0442 and P0456 and tighten my gas cap and clear the codes (hopefully it works).

Maybe if I bought a V8 I would have had better luck??? Heck I dunno, I should have just bought a used Chevy. Sorry everyone, but it's time for me to go back to the "General."

Yeah....and how many GM vehicles were recalled this year??

You bought a 2002 BRAND NEW...in 2001 I am guesssing??

And 4 years later you only have 30,000 miles.

Sorry...I'm calling BS on this one

Your trying to insult GM because they recalled vehicles for a known problem?!

Personally, I'd rather have it recalled than have the manufacturer deny a problem exists since the'97 model year until 8 years later when they finally get enough pressure from the media and the gov't.

Who does this sound like? Not Dodge! If they had a problem with ball joints, they would immediately recall the vehicles!

It isn't a known problem until the company or NTSA receives enough complaints about the problems(s).

I highly doubt that a company would sell something like a vehicle KNOWING they have a problem that could possibly cost them millions of dollars for repair after recall, let alone lawsuits for loss of life in an accident. I don't care if it's Dodge, Chevy, Ford, etc. Sometimes all the testing in the world doesn't make up for inferior parts. And until they ALL quit cutting corners to save cost, the problem will continue to exist. There is not one that is better than the other, but with the minimal amount of problems I have had with my '01 Dak, I'm very happy with it.

sfboarders said he has had nothing but problems with it and I have no reason NOT to believe him. With that said, I work with a guy that has had his Silverado in the shop more than 15 times in the first 4 months of owning it. The dealer had to buy it back under the lemon law. We all have had problems with vehicles, but brand loyalty is a personal decision based on our own experiences. Some good, some bad, but none are perfect.

And what's your point Yoda?

I said "but with the minimal amount of problems I have had with my '01 Dak, I'm very happy with it."

That doesn't mean it's the only Dodge/Chrysler product I've owned. As a matter of fact, over the years, I have owned four, plus one ford, three GM's, two VWs, etc. Some had problems, some didn't.

I'm on my second Dakota I had an 00 with 75+KM on it no porbs at all, good truck. I bought an 04 last OCT almost 15,000KM on it now not a problem.(knock on wood). As for DC being un-reliable my gramps has an 89 Ram with a billion miles with the 5.2 and that thing runs un-freaking-beleivable, if you treat these engines the way you should they will run forever.

You must be one of those people who like to start BS in forums. Before you start ASSUMING why don't you ASK QUESTIONS to get FACTS???

I bought my truck on 1/2002 and now I have 60k miles. Did I say when I hit 30k miles???

I bet most companies have recalls. Doesn't matter if it's General, Ford, Dodge, Japanese cars or Eurpean cars. So Dodge doesn't have recalls? Hmm I remember receiving a letter about a recall for the ball joints making a sound when turning.

I have some friend's who have Dodge Dakota's and Durango's and have never had any problems with there vehicles. I guess I just got the bad one out of the bunch. :(

It's hard to ignore the people who just want to start trouble, but sometimes it does require a rebuttal post. Don't let them bother you; they are all over this board.

I'd say you are right...you got a bad one out of the bunch. I had the same problem with an Isuzu I-Mark I purchased back in '85, but I'm not going to say all Isuzus are bad. A friend had the Isuzu Rodeo and never had a problem.

Some people get in a bad marriage and trade the spouse for a better model. Maybe not a good analogy, but it's the best I have right now ;)

Just do a search and you will find several examples of people notifying Chrysler, NHTS, even the news, about the ball joint problem. Chrysler gambled and I'd say they got lucky. The were able to exclude at least 4 model years from their recall.

I understand why you would be upset. But to tell you the truth I think you have kind of a freak there. The 3.9 is generally indestructable. I've seen 'em roll over 300K miles with absolutely no maintainance at all. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, but I can assure you it's rare.

If GM is so great how do you explain the problems with the Trailblazer? Had a customer that had hsi back to the dealer so many times it would make your head spin. It rarely runs right, it's plagued with random electrical problems.

If you wanna see a main seal a leakin you should look at a slightly older 4.3 V6 from chevy. That's gonna be leakin at the front and rear mains.

I have an '04 that I bought in '03 that has just over 2,000 miles on it, so he's not full of BS

I have 1 more experience to share. The Toyota Camry, probably one of the most reliable cars for sale in the United States today. Had a neighbor/cutomer that had one. It was a 97 or 97- I don't remember which. It had about 45,000 miles on it- the guy was older and retired so he didn't go anywhere much. Abotu 6 months ago, my Dad gets a call from the guy saying his car won't start- he tried cranking it when it made a "bang" and wouldn't do anything more. This car had been METICULOUSLY cared for. Open the hood, and it was surreal man. The connecting rod had sheard just below the wrist pin and had gone through the side of the block. Oil was everywhere, the car was totalled to say the least.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't buy a Toyota, but it can happen to any car.

I'm suspicious of the dodge dealer you are taking your truck to. First of all, I would say that putting in a new engine is a bad sign. It's possible, but unlikely that you would need a "new engine". Either you don't know what was done to your truck, or more likely, that you just got a bad dealer.

Any car will post a code if the gas cap isn't tightened properly. It's part of it's evaporative emissions controls.

02 sensors are admitedly common failure items, but that is the case on many many trucks. Had a customor with an Infinity QX35 or GX35 or whatever the hell they call their SUV that has had 4 02 sensors in just over 60K miles.

So I think your problems are mostly dealer.related, not Dodge related. Of course I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Hello Craig,

I'm not saying that GM cars are great. I'm not bashing any type of car or manufacturer. All I can tell you is that my experience with my Dodge Dakota is not the greatest.

I'm happy to hear that 3.9 liter lasted 300k miles. 6000 miles for an engine replacement is ridiculous if you ask me.

Funny that you said this because the dealer I bought it from found my truck from another dealership 75 miles away and guess what???

The dealership that I bought it from is no longer there. It's still a Dodge dealership but not the same name.

Well the check engine light came back on. This time it's only showing a P0442. The P0456 code went away. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow to pick up a new gas cap for $11.95. Isn't this emissions stuff covered under the 100K mile warranty? You think I can get this fixed for free? HAHAHA

There was talk about federally mandated emissions warrenties on cars for 140,000 miles or something like that... I don't remember exactly, but I remember reading it in a trade magazine or somewhere...

hope you have better luck with your truck.

You're right, I start BS for no reason whatsoever.

Maybe RE-READ your post.

""30,000 miles my oil is leaking again""

keyword here - "IS" leaking...not WAS leaking

Then you go on to say ""two months later""

So, 2 months after the 30,000 mile oil leak.

Either a)learn how to write better or b)learn to accept it when people find faults with the information you present.

You refer to the Dodge as your "first BRAND NEW vehicle"

So, by that statement, every other vehicle you owned was used. But you sing high praise about those used cars - - - ""My past cars were GM (Chevy and GMC). I've never had any major problems with my past cars.""

Would you have the same opinion of those cars if you bought them new and had the problems the original owners had to deal with??

Since it is the original equipment gas cap that is giving you the 0442 code, why would you replace it with another of the same quality? Go aftermarket. I put one on from Car Quest and haven't had a problem since.

Also, I'm kind of curious as to why you didn't argue with the dealer when you had problems at 6000 miles. You said the engine starting knocking and they replaced the engine? Why wouldn't you file a complaint under the Lemon Law and try to get a different vehicle? You don't just have an engine replaced without trying first to at least FIX the problem!!

At first I thought the posts from HELLO were a bit arrogant, but after reading through this, HELLO seems to make a good point. Something smells fishy and I don't think it's my ex girlfriend.

Why wouldn't a person question the dealer what the problem was with the engine that it needed replacing? You didn't say what problem was found only that it was making a knocking noise and they replaced the engine. When a vehicle is the biggest purchase a person makes besides their house, I would want my questions aswered if there were problems. I want to know what they fixed in case it happens again. THe dealer wouldn't have had a moments peace if all this happened to me.

I think you need to read yourself. "Is" leaking again meaking the second oil leak. First oil leak after rear main seal and the current leak that IS still leaking.

So where did you get 2 month's after 30,000 mile oil leak? I said 2 month's AGO my o2 sensor goes out.

I did question the dealership. They said they replaced the engine because of one of the crank rods. Instead of rebuilding the engine they replaced it.
