Subject: Brake Dust!!! IP: Logged
Message: Is there any way to keep that brake dust off the front tires? On all my previous cars (which had hubcaps) I never had this problem as bad. I wash my dak, the next day the wheels are covered in brake dust. I know you can get some kind of brakes that don't produce brake dust and never squeek, but I think they're expensive.

Message: What your looking for is called a brake dust sheild. Do a search on Google for them, there are plenty of sites that sell them. The mount behind your rim, not sure if they work. Might get a pair for myself. I am frustrated with the massive amount of dust too.

Message: I think ti is the way the rim is designed.... (is your a 97-99 dak?)
Mine wasa 99, I had stock rims and I had that problem just as bad
as you did. I got some eagle alloy rims, same brakes, and I NEVER
get brake dust on them... must just be the way the rims mare
designed? Get what I'm saying?
Aka I'm not saying you have to buy new rims to stop this dust.. Its
just what I noticed...

Message: Mine's a 99 too. I'll have to check those sheild things out. I like the rims that are on it, they're ok, but the brake dust is annoying.

Message: Use ceramic pads. They cost more but are worth it. Since I started using ceramic, I won't use anything else.

Message: be careful with those brakedust sheilds. They can rob your brakes of air. they need air to cool off.

Message: Ken;
I just ordered a full set of "Satisifed" brand Ceramic pads yesteday. The total cost, pads and tax, came to $260.
A couple of people recommended ceramic pads to me in the past month.
Since I'm switching to all PowerSlot rotors as my fronts are warped at 21,000; I figure I may as well go whole hog and complete the replacement with better than OEM pads as well.

Message: Oops, I misquoted it was $140 for all 4 corners. Right now the dealer is thinking caliper but they're not 100% positive. They did some work on the brakes before I decided to replace all the rotors and pads but the dang OEM stuff is squealing again.
This all started after I was out 4 wheeling in 80 degree weather going down 20 + degree slopes and through some majorly flooded wetland/swampy areas. I think the heating up and instantaneous cool down screwed the front rotors.
I'll be making damn certain they know if it was rotors or calipers before the new pieces go on.

Message: Ya know, I was thinking that instant cooling like that could destroy the rotors but I wasn't sure.

Message: Yup, it can but since I live in WA State where heavy rain happens 6 - 8 months of the year I think I'll take their offer of free installation and an extra 12 months/12,000 mile warranty on the calipers while the dealer is feeling generous.
Upgrading to PowerSlots, thicker rotor, and cermaic pads should cure overheating and warping.
