Subject: Really weird transmission?!?! IP: Logged

I just bought this truck about a month ago. I really like it and have done nothing so far other than a tuneup, changed fluids, belt etc.
The trasmission is what concerns me. If I take it easy on the throttle the truck shifts very smooth ,I have made several trips over 100 miles and it shifts just great at each and every stop. If I accelerate hard at all and make the truck downshift at every stop afterward the truck revs high before it will shift into 2nd or 3rd gear. It doesnt seem to matter if it is cold or hot. I can take it up the road and make it downshift then turn around and it will rev over 3000rpms before shifting even under VERY light acceleration.
I have changed the fluid/filter with new atf+3. I had considered going to +4 or amsoil but couldnt see spending the extra money if I am going to have to have the trans rebuilt.
Sorry I've been so long winded but does anyone have any suggestions or should I just give up on this one and plop down the cash for a rebuild?
One other note I wanted to do the band adjustment when I did the fluid change ,but after going to 3 different stores I couldnt find a tourqe wrench that would go low enough to the 72in/lbs the service manual specs for the bands.

Message: Welcome to DC's biggest problem will ALL their
cars and trucks.
Their trannys are the first to go or give
problems.
Your *friendly* DC stealership doesn't know a
thing about them either except replacement.
You'll be hard pressed to get a good replacement
to.
It's a VERY sad fact, but it's true!

Pep Boys carries a Stanley torque wrench that goes that low. NAPA carries the NB810 square socket for the front band for about $7.

On the high rpm's, sounds like the governor may be sticking. These newer models (as opposed to 60's models) have an aluminum inner cylinder that will flatten out and stick in the bore. That, in and of itself, doesn't require a rebuild. However, there are other possibilities. If, or rather, when you have to rebuild, get a hi-quality kit, and have the Trans Go kit installed.

Message: Harbor Freight also has a torque wrench that will do 20-200 inch lbs.
