My 92 Dakota went 65000 miles on the automatic. Then I had it replaced with a factory reman'd unit. That failed with only 12000 miles on it. The dealer told me that I should not race my truck, because the transmission can't take it. I told him I don't race it, but I pull a 5000 lb trailer a lot. I had Mr. Transmission rebuild my transmission, and it failed again after 20000 miles. Then I just got a used one from the junkyard. It is fine.

They say that most failures are from not changing fluid and filter when it should be changed. Also from shops using wrong fluid. They say Chrysler's take a different fluid than Ford or Chevy. I take mine to the Dealer.I don't take a chance with something that expensive to replace of fix.

120K on my 92 with 5.2L. It just went out. I think someone was pulling a big trailer with it because it had a trailer brake in it.

147k on original 92 Tranny behind a 5.2. I've done some towing and have sat the bed on the tires a few times.

I've installed an external filter from Summit.

I believe it is starting to slip.

103k on my 97 5.2 club cab replaced the whole thing along with the transfer case drive shaft because the guy that owned it before me never maintained either one of them as I'm finding out on various parts of the truck

200,000 on my '93 and no problems, just change fluid and filter every 30,000. These aren't babied miles either several trips towing a 3,000# boat and hauling stuff. Just hauled one ton of gravel last week. The guy at the gravel lot said I better take it easy theres a little over a ton in there. I smiled and said she's never let me down yet.

This is a real sore spot with me. The last thing I expected to have trouble with was the tranny. Having had a total blast with a 727 T'flite in my Charger, I had no worries about the New A-500 in the Shelby Dakota. It managed a good 15-20K between rebuilds. It was always the overdrive. I never towed anything. The manual stated Dextron II, but it should've been ATF+3. I didn't know this til later, and who knows what the dealer morons did. I did haul ass on the Interstate, but come on. On the 6th rebuild, I got 76 miles. Stopped at a different dealership and after all this, Mopar decided to replace it. Some time later it quit. I was headed home and lost overdrive. Then, every few minutes the tranny would downshift a gear. I managed to crawl into a parking lot in first. I shut it off and tranny fluid started pouring out as if it were bleeding. Anyway, it's been parked since '95, but is receiving a new 360 Magnum/46RE, yes RE-that's another story. Chrysler really dropped the ball on this one. I see where the aftermarket solved the tranny problems, but I also see owners of 2001's having the same problems, despite factory mods to some parts. Now these damned electronic models....don't even get me started. How can a company take something as great as the torqueflite tranny and ruin it in one fell swoop? A side note. I've spoken with John Vinson of JVX. He buys the trannys from Mopar and totally reworks them. He ran an A-500 behind a 440 Magnum in his truck (they make adapters for bellhousings too) for 3 years and towed at will in overdrive. Never had a problem. They use better parts and reprogram the valve bodies. These parts also do away with the need to run expensive ATF+3,4, etc. He said the only reason he moved to the A-518 was because the '500 had that low 1st gear, and he didn't need it. Kinda bugged him. They're expensive ($2600+), but they last a LOT longer.

A Dodge mechanic warned me to keep an eye out for problems when I bought my '92 5.2 new. I changed the filter and fluid every 36K. It still worked perfectly 8 1/12 years later with 217K.
