Subject: Truck tries to speed up when braking IP: Logged
Message: This has happened since I got my truck...it's just annoying and probably bad on the brakes.
When I try to stop, the truck tries to speed up for a split-second before backing off and stopping. I think it might be getting worse. I remember I had the same problem with my T-bird a long time ago and they fixed it but I don't remember what was wrong...the mechanic I just saw doesn't know either.
Does anyone know what I should ask them to look for?

Message: How stable is your idle? Does it bounce around more than 100 RPM when you're stopped at a light? If so, then you may have a problem with your throttle position sensor causing a surge.
I had a whole whack of annoying problems with my truck a short while ago, including sporadic converter lockup and shifting, occasional stalls, and erratic idle which sometimes would cause creep if I wasn't standing on the brakes. After trying several other 'fixes' including new plugs etc, I removed the TPS and reinstalled it, problems all disappeared.
I suspect either the electrical connector was oxidized, or the TPS screws where overtorqued, warping the housing and causing the TPS to bind. I just sprayed up the contacts with WD40, and put dielectric grease on the connector. I only hand snugged the TPS screws with a screwdriver, I needed a ratchet to remove them, they were so tight.
Try it, it only takes about ten minutes to do, and is cheap!
Good luck!

Message: Todd - we're all aware of your prejudice against the auto trannies; however it is unlikely that the tranny is the cause of this problem. Since you asked, there are many reasons to want an auto tranny - smoother ride, much easier in stop and go driving, less problems with clutch wearing out or linkage binding, not feeling we have to act macho to make up for our inadequacies...

Message: Check the brake booster and associated vacuum hose(s) for leaks, and the verify the booster check valve is working correctly. You can check that the booster is holding vacuum this way: with the engine OFF, pull the check valve out of the booster. It's that plastic thing at the booster that the hose plugs into. The check valve merely seats in a very snug grommet kinda thing on the booster, and should come free without much fuss.
