Subject: 1st and 2nd gen. frames IP: Logged
Message: Are there any MAJOR differences between 1st and 2nd generation frames?? My dad is looking at a 94 Dakota 4x4- wrecked- he wants to put 4 wheel drive on his 87. Differences between the two trucks are the 87 is a RWD long bed The 94 is a 4WD short bed. We can get a drive shaft made that is not a problem. both are 3.9 autos. will it be incredibly difficult to do this??
Thanx

Message: im not sure waht the 2wd frame looks like
but the 87 and the 94 frames should be almost the same, i know the 4wd systems did not change much at all. im not sure if the T-case will bolt up to a 2wd tranny, and the 94 and 87 trannys are very different, so something to think about

Message: A 2WD tranny will not bolt up to a transfer case unless you change the tranny output shaft and tailshaft housing...and the '87 is a 3-speed, the '94 is an overdrive version of the 3-speed.

Message: Caution: 2wd frames have the crossmember under the engine for mounts, and rack and pinion steering. 4WD frames have the crossmember further forward, just behind the radiator, and the engine mounts to the side frame rails and front axle.
Spike TV had a question about switching to 4WD from 2WD to 4WD, and their answer was to sell the truck and buy 4WD! Now i have a question for early Dak aficionados: On 1991 4WD with V8- did they change the 318 block to add the bosses for the engine mounts (like the magnums the next year)? If they did not, the 1991 V8 mounts would have been exclusive- mounting by the early style mounting 'ears'. Just wondering, while i look around for hardware to do a 1990 3.9 to 5.2 swap, and considering some 1991 hardware...

Message: making a 2wd into a 4wd is not worth it. i would spend the money to fix that 94 if its not too bad. there is way to much stuff involved to do the swap. tranny needs to be changed, suspension is way way different. on top of that, you need to bolt up the torsion bars from your 94 on the older truck. they probably wont work. the controller arms for a 4wd are different. i wouldnt waste my time on that. your looking at like a month of work. f*ck that.
