Subject: trac-lok piece identification IP: Logged
Message: I've actually posted this question before, but I think I finally have the answer to my question, but still looking for a little info. I recently found this piece in the picture in the bottom of my diff while changing the gear oil. I finally found a pic of a trac-lok that clearly shows the piece that I lost.
Anyone know what exactly the piece does or how big of a deal it is that It came out? It looks like some kind of a retainer clip or something.
Just out of curiousity too, I had the rear wheels off the ground when I was doing my oil change, and thought to spin the wheels. When one wheel spins one way, the other spins the same speed in the opposite direction? Isn't that a sign of an open diff? If so, I don't think my trac-lok is working worth beans.

Message: I don't know about that piece of metal, butif your wheels are spinning in opposite direction, then you trac-loc is shot. Mine isn't that bad yet, but it does slip.

Message: That's what I was figuring. I heard heard somewhere before that your tires will spin opposite directions if you have an open diff, so yeah, sounds like my limited slip is doing shat. Hopefully nothing falls apart on my drive to montana on monday....knock on wood :)

Message: I too have found that piece taking up space in the bottom of my differential. You are correct about it being a "Retainer Clip" and as far as its importance, I am not sure either.
Mine is obviously broken off but my rearend appears to still work just fine. I showed Marty at KRC Performance and he recommended I get it looked at ASAP and referred me to a guy about 50 miles away but I have not been able to make the time or trip yet.

Message: clip holds side gear preload adjustment. Don`t drive it without checking or you could damage ring & pinion

Message: Well, I have no idea how long ago it fell out, but I've put on at least 1000 miles since I've found, the only problem is that I think my trac-lok is totally shot, I'm pretty much a totaly peg leg.

Message: That thing is a piece of clutch pack retainer. Its purpose is to keep the clutch pack from spreading apart, which could render the limited-slip portion of your rear end non-functional. There are two of these in the Trac-lok rear end. That piece in Kaderdak's first post is a piece that's broken off one of them, allowing his clutch pack to separate.
In the link that 911mike provided, that guy's finger is touching a retainer, and you can clearly see that piece still attached to it. There's another one just like it on the other side.
