Subject: Anyone put a 180 therm in a 4.7 Dakota? IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone changed their thermostat out from a 195 to a 180 in a 4.7 dakota or durango? Did it have any affect on the running/performance/mileage other than the obvious cooling affect? Im fixing to change out the one in my dakota, and wanted to go a little cooler being in the south where the humidity is so damn bad, and wasnt sure if i should do it or not...
THANKS
TONY

Message: I put one in my truck. I didn't notice any performance gains. It was before I did my s/c though. I am sure with the s/c I would have notice something. I occationally get an engine light because my engine is cooler for too long at times. Normally just in the winter though.

Message: I've done it too. Even tried the 160 t-stat 9no error codes in Arizona) but saw nothing from it. Running the 180 for about a year straight and no clutch fan unless I tow something HUGE.
Temp stays a little lower on the gauge unless towing up a hill.
No power increase I could tell. But our intakes are PLASTIC without coolant flowingin them so cooler temp water may not do jack for us.

Message: Where did you guys or gals get your thermostat from? I have called the local Napa and others, and no one lists a 180 for a 4.7.

Message: Nope they don't list them. But the ones from the older engines DO fit if you cut a notch in them for the gasket.
Also, they don't have as long of an extension on the sensor into the water jacket. But, they DO work.
I bet I have pics still on my web site...
Wow. Looking at the date I've had this done a while! Taken form my old cam corder before i got the new digital cam corder.
Side by side comparison.
I've had the 180 back in there for a long time. It stays about a smidge off of the C line unless I tow up a hill. Then half way is usually max as long as I throw the clutch fan on.
A future mod will be a custom shroud housing TWO electric fans. I will stage them with one of my home brew electronic controllers so they only operate as single or dual depending on temp and if the A/C is on.

Message: I bought a Robert Shaw (I think it was a T-180) from Autozone for something like $7 and installed it without having to notch anything at all. It has been in there for something like 70k miles now and I have had no problems. The only time I had a problem with heat was when I pulled my clutch fan and only when sitting at a stop for a period of time.
