Subject: fuel pump? IP: Logged
Message: I'm driving along and all of the sudden my engine cuts off, just for half a second then comes right back on and drives fine. So I change the fuel filter. After a few weeks after being fine the engine shuts off again and doesn't come back on this time until I pull over and start it again. It may be a problem with the pump or injectors or the filter still, I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Also if it is the fuel pump I'm not sure if the pump is in the tank or in-line. 93 Dakota Sport 4x4 3.9L Magnum.

Message: I had the same kind of problem last year with another vehicule, i was down the road and everything stopped, no engine, no radio, no nothing.. couple seconds later.. magic, everything comes back all by itself.. After oppening the hood and swearing like a damned, i realized one wire was cut from the terminal, so every now and then, it moves away which result in killing the engine. I putted a new terminal and problem was solved..
Just take a look for any damaged wire around the battery area.. I hope this help..

Message: brandon, under the power distrubtion block, there is a splice of about 3 or 4 wires that you should check. the connection is probably corroded. you'll have to cut back the factory tape around the wires to find the splice and re-splice, preferably soldering the wires and taping them up again. this seems to be a common problem on the older dak's.
try looking at his post. copy and paste it in the address bar.

Message: Thanks guys. The link was helpful. I will check the splices this weekend. It seems that everyone with this problem also had trouble starting their trucks though. I've never had any trouble starting my truck. The engine just stops every once in a while. All of the electronics still work just the engine dies.
And is the fuel pump in-line or in-tank?

Message: in the tank unfortunately. some have found it better removing the bed than dropping the tank.
it could just be a loose ground to the pump.

Message: I went to the Dakota USA forum to ask them what they thought and one guy came back with it may be the crankshaft sensor which to me isn't even a remote possibility. Tell me what you guys think.

Message: could be. if the PCM can't "see" the crank sensor it won't know what to do. but, it seems that would thow a code.
i'd try the splice first, it's free. i like to eliminate things before throwin' a bunch of parts at it.

Message: Hello board my first post.
I have an 89Dakota that hasn't run in a while. Its a later model 89 with fuel injection. I have no fuel pressure at all. Have any of you jumped out the pump? tried to manually run it? I'm trying to identify the wire that feeds the pump. Any of you that have replaced the pump is there a common ground wire at the tank? Reason I ask is when I first got in the truck the fuel gage said 1/2. When I replaced the battery the gage went down below "E". I have added 4-5 gallons of gas and no change. These seem to be the only two things that are not working. Anyone had a problem similar to this?

Message: check the fuses. if that doesn,'t do it, try swapping the fuel pump relay for one that is known to work. like the fan or a/c relay.
if i may suggest, spend the 20 bucks or so for a HAYNES repair manual at your local auto parts house. you will find it an invaluable tool.

Message: Yes I have checked all the fuses(at least all the fuses I can find). Are there more in 89 then in the the cab near the E brake pedal? What is really strange is there dosen't seem to be a fuse for the pump. I am trying to identify which relay is for the pump. There are four on the drivers side fender. Two I have id'ed, one starter the other fog lights. AC is good wasn't thinking about that. Should be able to ID that. This is what I would like to jumper out. But even then with the fuel gage not working makes me wonder if I lost the ground at the tank. Don't really want to pull the tank down if I dont have to.
As for a Haynes manual it says to put a pressure gage in the line, if no pressure replace the pump. LOL No wiring diagram showing the wires to the tank or back of the truck, wire color codes dont match. Thats the second one of those I bought, there will not be another. Only reason I bought this one is I cant find any thing else. Should have bought the Dodge shop manual when I bought this truck new (what I normally do)
