Subject: Bernd. Gears for V6 IP: Logged
Message: Ok i'd like your opinion on this. I've got a 95 Dak x-cab v6 auto. i have the usual stuff done such as a V8 TB, K&N, IAT adjuster, 180 t'stat, MSD Blaster Coil, Accel 8mm wires, Borg Warner Cap and Rotor, 16" elec fan, underdrive crank pulley, gutted cat., 2 chamber flowmaster with turndown, and Mobil 1 diff. fluid. It has ran a best of 16.78 at 800 mph. but i am wanting to change gears, i've heard that since i'm changing them i might as well go with 4.10 to help compensate for the weight, and because it's a v6, auto. I want to get this truck into the low 16's. with cool air it should run a 16.5. how much will 4.10's hurt gas milage, i drive mainly city, hardly any highway. Will 3.90 be enough, or will i love the 4.10's more? thanks. again hopefully with the 4.10's it'll be low 16's. i hate this truck on bottom end, punching it from a standstill results in bogging and it taking a little while to get going. thanks again.

Message: I don't know what to say Daniel, I personally would go for the 3.90:1's because our trucks only have four gears to work with. I plan on 3.90's soon myself, but don't really have the money for it right now. How do you launch your truck off the line? Do you just punch it? What I do is put my feet both on the brake and the gas and bring the RPM's to about 1000-1500. Then when the light turns green you just smash on the gas and let go on the brake. This really helped out with my truck. I actually think I could run better that a 15.8 in the 1/4 now. Tell me about that fan you have and how did the gutted cat work? The cat might actually slow you down in the low end cause of lost back-pressure.

3.90's are the way to go on V6/Automatics. The 4.10's really don't give you a whole lot more unless you're running larger tires (32"-33").

Where can you get these gears at? I am thinking about getting some as well.

Message: Kris i also stage at 1000 rpm's. i also shift at 4800. that is how i ran the 16.7 pass. the gutted cat worked ok, mainly noticable in the exhast tone and top end performance. the elec fan i got from auto zone, it's a 16". it works good. i need to flush my radiator right now because idling for long periods of time the truck will start to overheat a little so i'm going to flush it.
i plan on going with 235/60/15 tires next time around. this will help with the gear ratio as well. i was also thinking that if i go with the 4.11's it might make me shift into overdrive in the 1/4. i'd like to finish the 1/4 at around 4600-4800 rpms in 3rd gear at around 85-90 mph. would the gears help out that much? thanks for the info.
