Subject: brake problem? IP: Logged
Message: Just got my new Dakota about a month ago.. 01 quad cab, 4.7l v8. having a problem when i try to brake. brakes work fine, but truck shakes quite a bit sometimes. this doesn't happen all the time, but only sometimes. the whole truck will just shake to a stop. new to trucks, so wondering what the problem is, and what it's going to cost to fix, cuz i'm assuming this isn't normal.

Message: sounds like warped rotors. they can probably be "turned" if they havent already. This shouldnt cost more than about 60 bucks assuming they do all the work. If you can take them off yourself and run them to your local mechanic he would probably do them for 20 bucks. Now to the reasons they might have warped in the first place. Make sure the monkey at your local tire shop does not over torque your lug nuts. they need to be tightened to the spec torq per dodge. next dont go through a car wash or let any water touch your rotors after you have been driving. they will be very hot and could warp when cooled quickly.
lastly they often warp when a person tends to brake later and harder than the usual driver. try braking earlier so you dont build up so much heat in the rotors. If your rotors cant be turned ask around on here for a good replacment before you buy OEM and it happens again. even if you have to purchase all new rotors i cant see the bill bieng much more than 200. hope this helps.

Message: This is a VERY common problem with the Dak's. Do your self a favor and upgrade the front rotors and pads to performance parts.
On my 00 CC I put on 2 sets of El'cheapo rotors and pads from AutoZone that warped in 10K, what do you expect for $60. I got fed up and spent $200 for Raybestos drilled and slotted rotors with SuperStop pads from rockauto.com and resolved the problem, even with towing. PowerStop or PowerSlot rotors with Hawk pads are supposed to be a good combo also.
If you turn the rotors or replace them with inferior (OEM or OEM replacement) parts, you will have brake problems again since the Dak's front brakes are insufficient for the truck's weight.

Message: Yes, this is a very common problem with Dakotas for some reason. Some times it's warped rotors, and sometimes it's not. Whenever someone says, "I may have a brake problem", somebody here immediatly jumps in and shouts "Warped!".
First thing to do is check your rotors and see if they are straight or not. If you're not sure how to do that, or don't have a dial indicator, take it to a good brake shop.

If the rotors are fine, check for a lot of other things; like ball joints, tie rod ends, pinion bearings, etc. There's lots of things that can cause the truck to shudder while braking. If you just jump in there and start replacing parts without checking, it starts to get real expensive and real frustrating.

Message: If it only shudders sometimes, the most likely cause would be brake pad transfer - hard braking deposits some material on the rotor, which makes it feel warped. The sensation will then go away when light braking cleans the rotor up. Reading traffic and adjusting your braking style may be all that's needed. Otherwise, there are better rotors and pads on the market.

Message: also, keep those back brakes adjusted and use a torque wrench to tighten lugnuts to 85 - 100ft lbs. overtightening lugnuts WILL warp rotors. adjusting the back brakes takes a little of the load off the front brakes. especially on the QC with the 11" drums in the rear. knock on wood, i've got 45,000 miles on my '00 QC with all the original braking parts in tact and with no warpage. if it's a 5spd manual, do as i do and let that engine do some of the braking too.
