Anyone have some good info on the new Dak's? I'm thinking of trading my R/T in on one this weekend.

spamble, keep your R/T at least another model
year.

I agree with daddio 100%. I didn't even bother to
drive one when I looked one over.

Maybe the 06 model will look better plus any bugs
the 05 developes might be addressed.

Well that brown plastic thing (is that supposed to look like wood?) in SLTs is bad, but it can be fixed. Laramies have a silvery piece there. The seats are firmer than earlier Daks I've driven but have been just fine for me on several trips over 100 miles. Give 'em a try. I think the optional lumbar adjustment is helpful.

The standard 4.7 seems like a good engine for this truck. Gas mileage is decent, I got 20 on an all-highway trip with cruise locked in at 65 and it has get up and go enough to be fun. If you want performance more like your R/T you might want to wait for the 260 HP/310 lb-ft 4.7 HO to be available. "Late availability" is starting to look like "we might have it this model year."

On the styling and "cheap materials", well, as they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". It seems like every change Dodge makes gets some criticism (heck I was mad when they dropped the club cab from the Ram.) If you like it go for it and don't let the critics stop you.

I have a friend who works for a large Dodge dealership and he says sales for the new Dakota are aweful. Not just here but all over the country. I have seen in the last week an advertising blitz for the new Dakotas with $9K rebates. I think Chrysler screwed up on this one and they're going to bite the bullet and get rid of the 2005's and replace them with something more appealing to the masses. I sure as hell wouldn't buy a new one. I personally think they are the most god aweful looking trucks I have ever seen.

The numbers tell all to the automakers or any business for that matter. If something turns out to a flop, when before they had a consistent seller, then yes they would change it unless they're looking for a loss liter item. With competition from Toyota, Chevy, etc., they'd be stupid to lose the segment of the market they created in the first place.

When was the last time a carmaker made any serious change within 2 years of start of production of a new design? I know full well the numbers tell the story but things just don't move that fast. There's tooling to be paid for (or at least try to) and most any significant front end change would probably need re-testing. And then there are all the new models in this market. I don't think a 2005 Frontier or Tacoma has even made it to my neck of the woods yet. I wouldn't be surprised if people are waiting till the new small pickups are all out before they pick one. (I had no such restriction since I don't care about foreign cars, wherever their manufacture site.)

Those are good points you brought up and it'll probably be at least a couple years before they get out of the mess they created. Oh well, I'm perfectly happy with my 00' Dakota. Take Care!

Interesting statement, mrwmrw. I checked the web site for my local dodge dealer www.carlindodge.com. They list available factory incentives. The Dakota is listed as $1,500, which seems (to me)like a lot. However, out of all the new car and truck incentives, that is smallest one. At least in my area (central CO), they are not having any trouble selling them.

"Incentives" was a marketing ploy used to get buyers in to the dealerships when the market was bad, or they were trying to unload bombs. However, that came back to bite them. Now buyers expect an incentive payment, or they are not buying. So the factory simply marks up the price, and then offers an incentive.

ALSO, DODGE IS OFFERING $2K IN "INCENTIVES" TO ANYONE CURRENTLY DRIVING A DAK OR DURANGO TO TRADE IN ON A NEW DAK OR DURANGO. ALL THE REVIEWS RATE THE DAKS AROUND A 8.3 OUT OF 10. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE HAVING TR0UBLE SELLING THEM. MY FRIEND SELLS THEM AND HE HAD 35 TWO WEEKS AGO, NOW HE HAS 4 LEFT. ALSO, THE HOLDBACK (ALL MANUFACTURERS HAVE HOLD BACK MONEY THEY GIVE TO DEALERSHIPS FOR SELLING A VEHICLE, ON MERCEDES FOR INSTANCE IT'S 6%, MOST CARS ARE 3%) IS $1K IF A DEALER SELLS 10 DAKS A MONTH. THE DEALER I'M GOING TO IS SELLING THEM FOR $300 UNDER STICKER AND COUNTING ON SELLING 10 A MONTH TO GET THE HOLDBACK MONEY AND PROFIT $700, YEAH, THEY DEAL STRICLY IN VOLUME. IT SEEMS LIKE A GOOD DEAL TO ME BUT, I'M GONNA GO DRIVE ONE SAT. AND SEE WHAT'S WHAT. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.

I have had my 05 since nov. This truck feels alot more solid then the 97 I traded in. The dak is awd and equiped with all the trailer towing options . I have the 17 inch wheels.I have parked next to the gen 3's in parking lots , the new 4wd's are not low riders like every one says. judging by the naked eye there is only an inch height difference at the top of the bed rail. Bear in mind I have a 5th wheel hitch in the bed of my dak. Fuel economy I am getting 1.5 mpg better with my awd 4.7 . then I got with my 2wd 5.2. both have 3.92 gearing. I remeber when the gen 3 came out and everybody mad fun of the looks of that truck. Now we are here 8 years later and people are going the same with the new model. I am very satisfied with my new dak. Chances are in 8 more years i will have the new 05 worn out , and there will be a new gen 5 body style to have the same debate with again .

I purchased an 05Dak Laramie Quad Cab. 4wd 18" chrome wheel option.
I think the truck is very sharp and very comfortable. Handling is just great. Nice quiet ride on highway. I had a 94 Dak before I got the new one.
I am not sorry and enjoy the truck and that is what it is about. Everyone is different as myself I think the previous Daks were extremely plain and bland. But thats why they make all the models to choose from.
Thats my .02 on my 05.

I live in the Upstate NY and have yet to see a standard shift 05 Dakota on any dealer lot (quad cab or club cab)as well as very few 8 cylinder models.
I wonder if the slow sales are due to the fact that everyone is waiting for standard shifts?

There's supposed to be a 6-speed Getrag available. I understood it was to be late availability like the 4.7 HO. I'd be really shocked if more than 10% of potential buyers were holding out for the manual. It's near impossible to find a stickshift of ANYTHING where I live (not counting sports cars seemingly ordered for the sole purpose of adorning the showroom.)
