Message: I have a 04 Quad with the 4.7.
This past summer I noticed that with small back and forth steering inputs, it felt as if the system was cavitating. I did not think much of it at the time and just took a mental note.
Fast forward to this winter.
This morning in particular (subzero with the windchill) and some other cold mornings, the steering was more difficult than my 1967 Mustang until the truck warmed up.
The fluid level is ok. Any ideas?

Message: I have an 04' 4.7 quad cab 4x4 with 4,800 miles on it since August. I live in Michigan and, too have been experiencing the cold weather (5 deg F this morning) Every morning when I start it when its thats cold out, I too notice an increase in effort to turn the steering wheel. I don't know what a 68 Mustange feels like, but the increased effort is there. It never concerned me, as it goes away when the fluids warm up. Also My parents have a 02 Buick Regal with the same symptoms...hard to steer immediately after a cold (below freezing) start.

Message: For what it's worth, I had this problem on my 2001 Club cab (4.7, auto, 4x4). It was almost like you didn't have power steering when it was really cold. I removed all the old power steering fluid and replaced it with ATF+4 (Mopar). Problem solved.
I thought Chrysler was using +4 on all models for factory fill power steering since 2002, but knowing them, maybe they switched back to a cheaper fluid/generic PS fluid.
