Subject: issues w/ my 99 dakota IP: Logged
Message: I purchased my 99 dakota new in may of 1999. So far I have had the following problems:
(1) clutch fan: replaced at 15,678 miles (by dealer)
(2) motor tapping when under load: reprogrammed, replaced intake gasket (by dealer). tapping still there
(3) Right front Hub and Bearing assembly: replaced at 42,449 miles (by dealer)
(4) rear universal joints: both went bad in rear driveshaft at 55,000 miles (I replaced with greasable u-joints)
(5)upper left ball joint: needs replaced. currently has 61,000 miles (I will probably replace)
(6) tranny, auto: won't shift from 2nd to 3rd when cold. If shifts fine once at normal, or close to, operating temperature.
Anyone have any thoughts on the tranny issue? I took it to the dealer (still under extended warranty) and they told me they put it on the computer and couldn't duplicate the problem. They also told me they took it for drives several times. Too bad by this time the truck is warmed up.

Message: You may have to leave it at the dealer overnight so they can duplicate the situation( cold operating). I had a intermitent starting problem on a Dodge van
(would not start when it was hot) and it wasn't properly diagnosed until the dealer tried to start it hot.

Message: I dropped it off the night before and they said they still couldn't duplicate it. I now have to take it up the night before and drop it off. The next morning I have to get a ride to the dealership and take the technician for a rid in the truck.

Do you mean "spark knock"? If so, read your owner's manual in the section about fuel and fuel quality.
For your transmission concern, they will want to experience your symptoms to get a complete "feel" for the problem.

Message: Had my truck at the dealer for not shifting from 2nd to 3rd when cold. The dealer found the front clutch seal was leaking. They removed and disassembled the tranny. It was cleaned and inspected. The cooler was flushed, all new seals and gaskets were installed along with new front clutches. When assembled they changed the fluid and filter.
This is at least what they told me they did.
Now the trucks shifts fine (at least for the last 2 days).
