Subject: PCM Re-Flash for Spark Knock Update IP: Logged
Message: OK, just a follow-up to a thread I started Earlier, since several people wanted to know the results...
1999 Dakota SLT, 5.2L V8
I had already installed the Robert Shaw 180 degree thermostat, Autolite 3923s, and a K&N drop in air filter. This resolved a lot of the pinging / spark knock, but it was still there when accelerating in overdrive and during hard acceleration.
Also tried 89 and 93 gas, which got rid of MOST of the rest of it. However, I am not willing to pay for premium gas for the rest of my life!
I went ahead and had the dealer re-flash the PCM with the TSB-related code to get rid of the ping. It is 95 degrees here today, I have 89 octane in the tank, and guess what...
The spark knock is GONE!
Some were concerned, as was I, what it would do to the power of the truck. I can honestly say that I don't notice any difference. However, keep in mind that I am not a "race you at the light" kind of guy/driver.
So, I am happy with the results, and I hope is lasts.

Message: Glad to hear the flash worked out for you.
Over on the Jeep Forums we are mad as hell because DC tricked us into getting our 4.7L motors PCM flashed for spark knock. They sent everyone an “882” recall notice for emissions to fix some minor problem and then included in the same flash reprogramming to reduce spark knock. All the 4.7L motors took a big performance hit. 0-60 gone from 7.2 to 8.3 seconds, and ¼ mile has gone from 15.6 sec to 16+ seconds. No one on the forum has had problems with pinging yet they forced the detuning on everyone.

Message: I had the flash done on my 2000 3.9l V6. After the "flash" I began adding mods including a Jet Chip II, 8923's, and a 180 Tstat. I then found a place to buy premium gas relatively cheap. So I went back to the dealer to see if I could go back to the original programming. No way, can' be done I was told. The flash is just another program to the chip but I guess the dealers do not have the original. Oh well, thats a mistake I will not make again.
