Message: i use castrol gtx and a purolator pureone filter.
gonna switch to amsoil though (sorry, lol), but i will keep using the pureone filters.
one of the reasons i finally decided to switch, i am getting a k&n drop-in filter, which may or may not have been proven to let more dirt in than my paper filters depending on who you ask. in any case i figure the better protection of a synthetic will counteract any harm from increased dirt, while at the same time supposedly increasing my hp (i'm actually switching over in my tranny and differential as well).
but the castrol gtx and purolator pureone filters worked very well for me, much better than the dealer crappus.

Message: I use mobil1 5W30 with Mopar filter. I just started using M1 at 10,000 kilometers. I think I'm going to go 10000km maybe 12000km oil change intervals seeing as how studies have shown that engine wear actually decreases as the oil ages - to an extent. and that most of the wear in an oil change interval happens in the first 3000 miles or so, so changing every 3000 miles seems to accelerate wear.

Message: Mobil1 5w-30 with a Motorcraft FL-1A. The FL-1A is a
Purolator Pure 1 for about $3. Plus it's a bit bigger than
the stock size oil filter.
From what I've read, Mopar filters are junk, as they're
made by any number of different manufacturers and
can vary greatly in actual filtering ability.
Plus, because it says "Motorcraft" on it, the FL-1A gives
my 4.7 quad at least 10 extra horsepower! (Just
kidding)

Message: 87 cent Walmart oil and filter. It's a 01 Dodge, don't want to spend too much. Next time I'm going to try a full length "FL-1A type" next now that my stock of stubby filters runs out. Looks tight on the 3.9, but I've managed to use (adapt if necessary) this filter to everything from Gravly, Jeep, and Toyota engine and transmission. Nice to just stock one.

Message: Deaver,
Cut open a FRAM and you will see why the are junk. Quick fact for the day, the manufacturer of FRAM makes the thin filters for house AC systems. They are not in the automotive business.
Any Dana product is good: Wix, Napa, etc.
Champions products are good as well: Mobil, K&N, Pure One I believe.
I used Napa filter & Mobil 1 oil

Message: Have you guys been in an auto parts store and seem the oil filter displays with the can cut off the filter,,, if you have seen one you'll know why not to use Fram filters. Fram filters have about 1/2 the media of premium filters and the other internals are garbage also.
Yeah I know they are only $3 when a good filter is $7, but I wouldn't bet my engine on a cheap filter.
Wix and Hastings are good filters, Carquest and Napa sell these as thier premium brand filters. I don't go to the Carquest store often, but when I do I always pickup 3-4 oil filters.
I ran Mobil 1 and CQ filters on my 00Dak with good success, but am going to go all Amsoil on the 03. I ran Amsoil ATF in the tranny and P/S with very good results.
Hey Lemmers, does the FL-1A have the same construction as the stock aftermarket filters? Some of the newer filters have anti-drainback vavles and from what I remember the FL-1a has been around for a long time. Just wondering as I wouldn't mind getting a larger filter. I guess the easiest way to find out is to gut one.

Message: Because some of us use our trucks as trucks and want them to last as long a possible. If it's a grocery getter, dino will fit the bill. If you tow with the truck, drive in high tempertures, tow in high tempertures, synthetic will protect the engine, transmission and diff's better than dino.
Even Dodge says to run synthetic gear lube in the rear diff if towing and requires thier synthetic transmissin fluid ATF+4 because they know the benefits of running synthetics. (Yeah yeah, I know ATF+4 is not a true synthetic, but close enough)
It's not saying you can't get a vehicle to last if your religeous about changing the fluids, problem is, most people don't service thier vehicles when they should. Synthetics provide longer service life and can go 2-3 times as long as dino, preventing problems if someone does not service thier vehicle regularly.

Message: If you guys think synthetic oil is not worth it or having good filters is unimportant think again. I've got 495000 miles on a 93 3.9 that I pound the hell out of and it stays running strong because of the synthetic. There is no way it would have lasted that long with the cheap crap. I've just started using amzoil after using syntec and I have even seen an improvement in power and milage over the castrol syntec. I have always used the Napa gold filters and change oil every 20000 miles.
