Subject: electrical problem PLS HELP! IP: Logged
Message: i have a 97 SC dakota and recently my battery died on me. i got a new optima red top because i have subs in the truck and everything. well, when putting it in, i wasnt really payin attention to what i was doin and hooked the terminals up backwards. at first it blew my main 140amp fuse in the fusebox under the hood. i got a new fuse and got the battery connected correctly now, yet my gauges arent working at all, my cd player is getting absolutely no power, my power mirrors arent working and lastly neither is my dome light inside the cab. what on earth could i have fried, and how would i go about fixing this? PLEASE HELP

Message: wow dude you screwed up.
First: disconnect the battery. Then:
Check ALL fuses everywhere in your truck, and replace the bad ones.
Check for Fusible Links between battery and fusebox, and between alternator and fusebox. You might have popped some.
Also, take a real good look at your truck's wiring. Blowing a 140(?) amp fuse will heat up some wires.
Only schematics I have are for my 2004, so I don't know the wiring specifics of your truck.
Good luck.

Message: What do you know, when I had my old 91 Dakota, and my battery died, i had it jumped, and same problems. There is a wire behind the dash that got burned up with the fuses. I had all the same symptoms, no working gauges, no dome light (which your dome light will probably be burned up) and no radio. It took us 2 weeks to figure it out and it was a pain. Took it to my local mechanic and was fixed within an hour of work. Good luck man!
