Subject: 1/2 tank at only 135 miles??
IP: Logged

Message:
I've read a post while back that someone rented a 05 Dakota (4.7L) 2x4 and filled the tank up. About 135 miles later there was only 1/2 tank of gas left.

If you can only get a 22 gallon fuel tank and figure up the math. That only 12.5 MPG AVG

If thats the case then I'm sticking with my 5.2 4x4Dakota that get around 16MPG AVG.

Your truck was hit by a school bus?? With such impact you might has well be looking for another dakota. I think the avg bus weighs in at 7 tons.

Even a side swipe would cause damage.

But I was looking at a few 05 Dakota trucks on the dealers lot and I couldn't believe that the 4x4's have been droped that low. I gess Dodge built the new Dakota for the Car&Driver people.

Daddio, don't get in a hurry for a Dak with a stick. The NV3500 is not a good tranny behind a V8. Trust me, mine's been nothing but trouble and the dealers (I've been to 3) refuse to acknowlegde the issue. There's no problem as long as you always shift below 3000 RPM. Any higher and 1-2 and 3-4 shifts frequently balk. The tranny simply refuses to go into gear as often as not requiring you go back down to the gear you just came out of then try the upshift again.
I've driven everything from 1940's willy's jeeps, 1950's 3-on-the-tree Chevy's, 1960's VW's, 1970's Duece and a half army trucks, a Datsun 240Z, 1975 Vette, 1988 F150 and many other vehicle's with manual tranny's and never had any trouble mastering any of them, but this piece of sh!t tranny still sometimes grinds going into 2nd even at low RPM's whiole shifting carefully.
Don't get the stick in a V8 Dak!!!!!

A, the fuel guage is NOT a good way to determine mileage. B, a brand new engine will get sometimes as much as 15-20% worse mileage than the same engine once it's broke in. My 4.7 got 15-16 for the first 6000 miles or so, ever since it's been 17.5-19.

Well guys,
If neither of you have had any problem with the Chevy V6 tranny that Dodge decided to put behind their V-8 (even though the tranny is only rated for 300 ft-lbs of torque and the 4.7 with slight mods easily exceeds that), it must be that my tranny truely is defective and all 3 of the dealers who said there is nothing wrong with mine refusing to shift over 3000 RPMs are typical DC corporate suck-ups who are more interested in towing the company line than taking care of their customers and insuring the product they put on the street is safe and reliable.

My truck has had 3 recalls.

The clutch fluid resevoir was left hanging by it's supply line when it was delivered to me.

The shift horn bolts were never torked down to the top of the tranny and it slung most of it's lube on the drive home. When I drove it back to the dealer and pointed out the grease running down the tranny and dripping on the ground they said, "All manual tranny's leak a little".

There were extra bolts and insulation clips left scattered on top of the engine.

The power steering pump blew a seal and emptied itself when the truck was a month old.

The right head was incorrectly milled and had to be replaced because it rattled like a bucket of bolts.

If Tennesseee had a lemon law, DC'd sure have a pucker from sucking this one. As it is, unless I want to hire a lawyer and sue I'm stuck with this pice of SH!T. The last time I took it to the dealer a tech rode with me so I could show him it won't shift at higher RPM's. When it wouldn't go into gear I had the tech put his hand on the shifter and try. He couldn't get it to go into gear either. When we got back to the shop he told his manager that the problem was I wasn't pressing the clutch all the way to the floor!!!

You're right Daddio, the only way to enjoy the full power of a good motor is with the control of a tight short throw manual tranny. Too bad Dodge won't put one in the Dak.

The gas gauges are hardly linear. Same for most DC &
GM cars out there. On some of the Chebby & Dodge cars
I driven, a half a tank equates to ~5 gallons!!! Dodge
trucks not-withstanding.

Any car/truck that shows a full tank after, say, 100
miles of driving, (assuming you fill'er up), I'd be
suspicious of gas gauge accuracy or lack thereof.

Tnjones, sorry to hear about your problems. I guess, like life, sometimes you get screwed, sometimes you jump for joy. I regularly wind my 01 cc 4.7 Rancho lifted 5-speed to 5k rpm, first, second, third, and a couple times in 4th nearing speedo cut-out. And, once in a while, pop the clutch for a little bark with my 33" mts. 3 1/2 years now, no problems, but hey, tomorrow, the whole thing might blow apart.

If that 05 4.7 has a gas gauge like the one in my 04 3.7 the top 1/2 tank contains about 8 gallons of gas. That makes the 135 miles come out around 17 MPG which sounds about right to me. I get about 160 miles out of the first 1/2 tank on my V6 5-spd 4x4.

You need a new Sending unit. There no way you can get 10 MPG with a Dakota unless you doing nothing but pulling a 30ft boat.
