Im prepareing to buy a 99 Dodge Dakota from a nearby dealer. Its a 4x4, v8, sport, club cab..with around 47000 miles. Hes wanting 14900 for it.Is this a decent price? Is theire any notible differences with the 99? any problems? Just wanting a lil help. Thanks...oh and hows the milegeon the 99s

Message: It is hard to say what the truck is worth without knowing a lot more about it. I priced it out a Edmunds.com for you in a "typical" configuration with automatic, tilt, air, with no power windows or doors. It came to about $15,800.
You can check the book value at any of the following sites yourself.

Depending on the condition, 14,900 seems to be a pretty good price, but if a dealer is asking 14,900, you can bet he is willing to come down a bit.
You can learn of any problems with the 99s by looking at all the messages on this board. The one that comes to mind is a "spark knock" problem found in many of the magnum engines. This can be cured (usually) with a cooler thermostat and some different spark plugs. Fixed mine anyway.
Mileage will obviously vary according to your driving habits, but I wouldn't expect anything much over about 17, maybe less since it is 4WD.

Message: Well.. I bought this exact same truck about 2 months ago for $15,900 (however mine only had 34,000 miles on it and qualified for the extended warranty for 4 years 75,000 miles)
With the higher mileage... it sounds like a reasonable deal. My truck was on the lot for $17,995 and I talked them down $2,000 from there. When I looked at the "blue book" value of it from N.A.D.A. it showed that the retail on this truck was around $20,000.
Well, I went ahead and ran a report from the N.A.D.A. site based on the info you gave before and this is what they came up with:

So for the money, it appears to be a good deal...however, before you buy, be sure to have the vehicle inspected just to make sure everything is on the "up and up".
As far as quality goes... my '99 Dak has been just "too sweet". After the inspection was done, all that was found wrong was a leaky thermostat gasket, which the dealer replaced... and I haven't had any problems since.
Overall, I think you are on to a "great buy". However I guess you just have to make up your mind as to whether you want it or not... Good luck on your decision.

Message: I have a 2X4 version. I think the '99s have a sloppy 1-2 shift in the automatics. I put a Trans Go shift kit in and fixed that. A lot of recent Dakotas are having brake disc/drum warping problems. Other than that I have had zero problems with mine. '99 build quality seems to be better than the '01s.

Message: Since the day my '99 Club Cab 5.2 4X4 was delivered in April of 1999, I have had exactly two problems (not related to Mopar Performance Parts I've added on) - the engine block heater leaked and the passenger side door window would bind in it's tracks on the way down. Now, at 25,400 miles, I think I'm starting to hear the dreaded "ball joint popping" - so problem #3 is starting.
Compared to other vehicles (all GM trucks and cars) I have bought new, this Dak is by far the best built. Great fit and finish, the paint is awesome and it just doesn't break.
Adjust the TV cable to help with the tranny shifting issues.
I used to be the Controller for a Chevy dealer and lemme tell ya, if he took this in on trade and if he's asking 14,900 - and since this is a truck - then he's got about 3,000 profit in there. Our owner always said (and the numbers proved it) that it was the used vehicle lot that let him afford to sell new cars. The last year I worked there, the average "real" profit on a used car was $2,850, used truck $3,280, new car $240 and new truck $880.
