 Subject: Well its time for another float

I know for a fact that the sending unit is off by 2 gallons. Every time I add 10 gallons ($20.00) the needle goes from empty to just above the 1/4 mark when driving. Then when I hit a bumb it goes over to 1/2 then almost to 2/3.
Do any of you have the same problem.

you know they been using then same type of sending unit sence Henry Ford rolled the first modle T off the line. Hopefully the engineers will think of a to finaly think of something to replace the little plastic float.
And no, you not alone when it come to a incorrect gas gauge.

My '95 gauge went out in early '99. I paid to have it fixed, around $400 if I remember.
I read a post somewhere, might have been this board or another, that someone cleaned theirs and it started working again (sand paper for 1 person and eraser for 1).
I'm in the habbit of resetting the tripometer.

I think mine could be off 1.5 gallons.
I might have to get this corrected since are Dakotas are a bit more gas thursty in the winter.

It may not be your float. I think there's some sort of electrical dampening circuitry (capacitor?) which is supposed to smooth out variations, so your gas gauge doesn't swing wildly as you go over bumps or around corners. That said, I don't know if the circuitry is down in the sending unit, or tied to the gauge itself. The float is supposed to float on top of the gasoline in the tank. Thus, if the float is stuck at the top of the tank and won't descend with the gas level, or sinks below the gas level, you have a float mechanical problem. Otherwise, it's probably electrical.
Trying to judge a float operation by only partially filling a tank is deceiving. The quarter tank marks on the gauge do not correspond exactly with quarter volume increments in the tank itself (6 gals for a 24 tank). When you fill the tank, does the gauge show at or above full?

Percent Tank Full Message - Each time the cluster receives a message from the PCM indicating the percent tank full, the cluster programming applies an algorithm to calculate the proper gauge needle position, then moves the gauge needle to the proper relative position on the gauge scale. The algorithm is used to dampen gauge needle movement against the negative effect that fuel sloshing within the fuel tank can have on accurate inputs from the fuel tank sending unit to the PCM.

Every time I make a turn the needle goes crazy. So it could be electrical for me.
