Subject: Clicking noise & steering rack

Just a word of warning on the steering rack. I had this clicking noise start in my 02 QC AWD (35K miles) about 4 months ago. When turning the wheels to the right from just past center to full lock it would "click". No, not the full lock power steering feedback either.

When I took it to the dealer to have them check, and replace, the ball joints I had them check this noise out. Their response was that this was clock spring noise and that it was "normal". "They all do it" was the response. My question was "Why did this just start then?". "That's just how it works".

After a bit more discussion (negotiation), they agree to replace the clockspring. After I got it back, the clicking was still there. As dealer service is such a pain in the azz, I let it go for then.

After another month, I took it back in as the warranty was up in a week and "requested" that they look deeper as the noise was coming from deeper in the column then the clockspring. After 2 days of diagnosis, they told me that they could not isolate the sound, but given that they knew I wouldn't accept no action, they ordered a new steering rack. It was installed the next week, and the alledged "clockspring noise" is now gone.

I am somewhat thankful now that it is out of warranty and I won't be dealing with them any longer.

By the way, this is the same dealer that told me that my ball joints were good because the "wheel wiggle" test was good (no measurement!)

I got a poping sound a full tilt too, I caused it by locking the wheel to far parking down a hill.

I just had ball joints and tie rod replaced about two weeks ago.

And about 2 months ago I got that same click. I can have my truck stopped and move the steering just a little bit to the right and left and I hear a clicking noise both ways??? Sounds like the same problem.

The clicking that mine was doing was only when turning the wheels to the right. It would start clicking just past center and keeping clicking as the wheel moved to the lock.

It was doing it before my upper ball joints were replaced, and continued after they were replaced. The sound was like a mis-aligned turn signal auto shutoff.

My original note was also to alert people not to blindly accept any dealer "...it's the clockspring, and it's normal..." statements.

I had the clicking noise coming from the steering wheel too. They replaced the clockspring and the steering intermediate shaft twice. The noise is gone, but I can't say how or why. It could have been the clockspring or the steering shaft, or it could have been something else in there that they touched or adjusted while they were working.
