Message: I wanted to install a little light in my cab that told me when the fan clutch was engaged. So i started looking in my FSM. I found out the clutch is compleatly mechanical. And that it is variable, that is the clutch is applied more the hotter the surrounding air is. I had thought the clutch was controlled by the computer. I have heard many people say the clutch will be engaged for the first few minutes after start up. I don't see how this is even possible based on the service manuals description of the clutch.
Also when the car is off and cool the fan doesn't really free wheel at all when spun by hand. What are some other peoples experiances with that.

Message: Adam your fan clutch is a mechanical device therefore it runs with silicone based fluid, This fluid will get more viscous when it is cool. The clutch will engage from time to time during startup and more so when it detects higher air temps from the radiator.
Relax. Its working as designed.

Message: You are correct in that it is purley mechanical. Although it is designed to enguage the fan as hot air is sensed through the radiator... there is some residuial engaugement at other times.
Specifically, on cool mornings when the internal silicone fluid has setteled to one side... the fan will "roar" for a mile or so until centripital forces trow the fluid to the outside of the housing thus dis-engauging the fan.
Many people have mistakenly thought that their automatic transmission was not shifting properly because the "roar" of the fan on cool mornings SOUNDS like the engine is over-revving.
