Subject: fuel mileage on various models IP: Logged
Message: I recently had an accident where my dakota got totaled. I loved the truck while I had it so I'm going to replace it with another one. Since I now am in college and have a 130 mile trip to get home, fuel mileage is a concern. so if anyone has values for any 97-99 dakotas (options don't matter), EPA or personal, I would appreciate it if you would post them.

Message: My 02 is 2wd and has the 3.9. I seem to get 22mpg on the highway at around 70 mph and 16-17 in town on a consistant basis. I have no mods at all. I don't push it hard though either.

Message: If you're looking at 97-99, best option is to go with a Regular Cab with 2wd, 3.9 and 5 speed, and maybe 3.23 gears (can you get those 3 together? not sure). If you hop up to 2000, you can get a 4.7 RC 5speed, that would be a sweet truck. If you want an extended cab, then get the 5.2, skip the 3.9 in a CC form, cause it'll get worse mileage than the 5.2, and cannot get out of it's own way. But in RC form, the 3.9 or 4.7 is the way to go. Also add on a K&N CAI (or homebrew using a K&N cone), as that will probably get you an additional 2mpg highway.

Message: I have a 2003 R/T C.C. and get 14.5mpg in the city, and 17mpg on the highway. These are mean averages. I go up and down sometimes on either of those figures.
Cheers!

Message: thanks for the info guys. I had no idea the K&N could get out that much extra. on average how much is the diffence in mpg betwen the different cabs (RC, CC,and QC.)daksprtpls02, I found that my 97 RC w/ 3.9 got about the same (typically more toward 21, but i drive hard sometimes.) My parents are helping me in my hunt and found a solar yellow 99 r/t and they think it has a 5.9 (don't these trucks have "5.9 R/T" on the side?)
if anybody has numbers on this truck it would be appreciated.

Message: '01 QC, 4x4, 5.9, Auto, 3.92 posi, stock size tires. Simple mods are a CAI, tanneau cover, and Hypertech. Otherwise bone stock and original at nearly 60K miles.
Cruising the highway at 80+ mph, mileage is 15. Low speed driving - 60'ish - gets about 18. Around town is about 12. Towing a heavy/boxy trailer gets 10-12 on the highway.

Message: All RT's have the 5.9. That is whay they are an RT, the bigger engine, better handling. Anything that doesn't have a 5.9 and has RT on the side is fake, and gay!

Message: I have a 2001 Ram 1500 with the 3.9 V-6 engine and five speed manual transmission. Gets an average of 19 mpg. Have a Cavalier that gets no less than 30 mpg and best highway mpg was 39. Since you're going to school and money is probably tight right now think about a Neon or Cavalier.

Message: I havea 2000 CC 4X4 I just bought. It averaged about 15 mpg, though I do more town than highway driving right now. I had a shop do custom duel exaust with a flowmaster muffler and got another 1 mpg/1.5 mpg on average. I think after the winter I'll put some less aggressive tires on and get another few mpg, or so I've been told (came with some monster agressive at tires).

Message: I don't know if your considering a 2000+ Dak, but my 2000 CC auto 4.7 gets 18-20 mpg highway, 16-18 mpg city and 11 mpg towing 4000#. Only mods are the CAI, TPS to .72v, AIT relocated, and synthetic fluids throughout.
From what everyone is saying, the 4.7's are real fuel efficeint for the power they deliver, I agree.
