Message: Sounds about right, I called Federal Moguls tech people and they said that there was no way I was gonna get them on by hand, Said to drive them on with a socket or piece of pipe, Only tore 2 of them and they have rubber cement on em now curing so I can button this damn thing up and be done with it,

Message: I just changed a ball joint today on the drivers side and had the same problem.
I drilled a hole in a scrap piece of wood the same diameter as the lip on the new boot. Then I used this to press the grease seal into place. I could do it while the ball joint was on the truck, just trim the piece of wood to clear the bolts. It wasn't easy, took a lot of force on the thumbs but I'd already spent about an hour trying everything else to get the boot on.

Message: Did my upper driver last weekend, had the same prob. I was able to get about half of it started and that was it. Ended up getting the half on and then took a pair of channel locks (with a towel as a softener) and squeezed it the remainder of the way on. When it did go on it sort of "popped" So far so good no leakage and no tears in the boot

Message: Some good ideas there guys, I did mine with a peice of aluminum pipe that was the same ID as the seal or so I thought, Uppers went on great, Tore both the lowers and I am pissed, But hell , anything is better than the popping loose factory ones that were on there,Gonna fabricate a cover for them today to keep the dirt out and grease off the rotor,

Message: I did the same thing as 01quadcab4x4, using the channel locks. I started one side, and just worked my way around the edge, squeezing the lip of the dust cover over the edge of the ball-joint, going slowly and doing a little at a time. No rips, and it did sort of pop when it went on.
That was the only way I could see to do it!
