Subject: Spare Tire Replacement IP: Logged
Message: Incredibly, two weeks ago, I was watching TV in the living room when suddenly I heard a loud pop and release of air. I went outside and looked underneath my Dakota (I had noticed a few weeks prior that the spare tire had a nasty welt on the sidewall) and sure enough, the spare tire had burst.
Searching for this tire size (a Goodyear LS 265/55R15) has proven to be quite an adventure. I would rather not have to pay $100 for a spare tire, so was wondering if anyone knew of a cheap alternative and from who. So far, I have not had much luck finding this size online.
Thanks for the help as always...

Message: Can I get away with a "thinner" tire, which I believe is the second number of the tire rating (or is it the first)?

Message: You could go with a thinner tire but if you have a limited slip rear end you would want to stay ith the same diameter. In that case the tires that woulkd work would be
195/75/15
210/70/15
225/65/15
these will put you within .1 inch of the same diameter

Message: Thanks, DAK2...In regards to the LSD, how would I know if I had this on my Dakota (2000 SLT Club, 3.9L)?
And maybe a dumber question: How are you calculating all that in your tire recommendation?

Message: As far as LSD, Check the spec sheet in your glove compartment. It will say "anti-spin rear end" somewhere on it if you have it. Also, there should be a piece of tape around the rearend near the brake drum backing that will have the rear gear ratio and if it has LSD, it will be wrtiien there too. At least my '99 has it that way.

Message: Arghhh...! I gave the wrong tire size! My tires are 255/65-15 (not 65-55)...What would be a diameter fit for this size with a thinner tire?
Thanks for your help and all others for the calc and LSD info.

Message: Using the tire calculater, I came up with a similar diameter with a 220/75R15 tire. Am I on target here, Dak?

Message: Yea the 220/75/15 will work.also a 235/70/15
would work.Sometimes a larger tire is cheaper than a smaller due to the fact that the larger may be a more common tire.On my "89" shadow
I went from factory 175/70/14 to a replacement
of 195/70/14 they were a good replacement and they were about $15 cheaper apiece.
GOOD LUCK

Message: I promise this is my last question about the purhcase of a spare tire. I haven't been able to find a 220/75 (know of any good online tire stores), but have found plenty of the size you mention (235/70). I have the stock rims on my 2000 Dakota SLT. Any problems mounting these tires on these specific rims, or will any 15" tire fit properly within reason?
Thanks again for your help, Dak...

Message: Sorry a 220/75/15 is a virtual impossability to
find the 235/70/15 will probably be your best
choice generally tires go up in 10mm increments
using xx5 for their designations such as 195,205,215,etc.so since there are a lot of
235/70/15 sizes out there you will have the choice of type and price.
GOOD LUCK in your quest

Message: The goodyear tire should be under warrenty and the papers should be in the truck. Even if its not go to a goodyear tire place and tell them it was a spare tire and it just blew.
Ps. Its better to buy the same size. And if you have a limited slip just to be safe get the same size because even if the tire is out buy just a bit it could ruin the LSD. If its not LSD it will still cause the Differential to spin all the time causing problems in the future. Even though the tire is a spare you never know. Plus it looks cool when your off roading and you get a flat and have a full size spare to through on.

Message: Yeah, that's probably a good idea to stop at a Goddyear tire place, but I have a feeling the warranty won't cover this. I had noticed a very significant "bubble" on the sidewall a few weeks ago and although I didn't look at it closely, I'm pretty sure it was caused by driver error (I notice a tire on the truck that has significantly more tread on it than the others), so I would be surprised if they'd prorate the price of another tire, but who knows? I'll stop by and see.

Message: Listen if goodyear wont then go to the dodge dealer. It was a spare tire that has almost or no use at all. Even if it was caused by driver error some one will replace it.

Message: I spoke to the Dodge dealership who directed me to locate the nearest Goodyear dealer. It's not their product, so I understand that it's not their problem. And, no, it looks like this tire has gotten a lot of use from the look of the tread, as I do think it was not the original spare. As I mentioned in a previous post, it's clear there's a newer tire on the truck not that was apparantly used to replace what ended up as a spare. I'll see what Goodyear has to say. I think best case scenerio is they prorate a new tire, which I hope then will reduce the cost of the original LS to something around the $50 I might have to pay for a different sized tire. We'll see, though.

Message: Just curious...I went to try the various tire
size calculators in this discussion and I don't
think they handle my tire size since it's not
expressed in a "metric" measurement. I have a
'00 Dak with the 31x10.5R15LT Goodyear Wrangler
RT/S's on them.

Message: I had a chance to visit 2 Goodyear "authorized" dealers who told me that since it was a "road hazard" claim, I would have to go to a Goodyear tire store. Where I live, there isn't one in the vicinity. Seems silly to me that an "authorized" dealer can't process a road hazard claim.
So enough with the Goodyear hassle. I need a spare tire, since I've been driving the truck without one for weeks. I've decided to go ahead with the 235/70 tire as the spare.
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions in this thread.
