Subject: Pressure Washing the engine compartment
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey, I know of several auto-detailers that power wash the engine compartments of vehicles to get that pristine-clean look under the hood. Obviously, I should avoid point blank range and the front coil on the radiator. Has anyone here tried this before and what else should I watch out for? What do I do with my K&N cold air intake filter? Please advise.

P.S. I have a 2600 psi honda washer

my advice, you're crazy, i've never seen power washing the
engine compartment mentioned in any factory service manual as
needed maintenance, so why take the chance at screwing
anything up but if you must you might want to consider
removing your frame from the body and cleaning that too!

uhhh...anyway. there are many products available at your local parts store for cleaning the engine bay. Find one and follow the directions. I usually use a product that has "orange" in the name. I can't remember the full name. Anyway, just spray some of that all over, let it sit for 10/15 minutes, then spray of with a power sprayer. Just dont stick the nozzle up close on electronic boxes, vents, and throttle body and you should be ok.

As for ugh's STUPID reponse, a ditry motor runs hotter because the layer of dirt and oil act as a heat insulator. Consider this your "tip" of the day.

yeah, it is done all the time. 2600 may be high. cut the pressure down, plastic wrap the air filter, electronics etc. just think about where you are directing the spray. many things are done that are not in the manuel. you should not speed either, but that occurs a lot. i do not think you are crazy.

I use Simple Green or AMSOIL Power Foam and hot water from a
water hose ... NOTHING ELSE !

Beware of any other engine degreaser especially the "Purple
Power" type of cleaners. They will damage aluminum.

I plummed a hot water spigot outside of my house just for hot
water washing purposes. I never use a pressure washer under
the hood.

Dr. D

p.s.

Simple Green is the safest detergent for aluminum cleaning
and .... Amsoil makes a very good product called "Power Foam"
that is very safe and effective also.

as for ScoJoDak's STUPID answer, forcing water into an engine compartment can amd will damage electrical components and can render a perfectly good engine inoperable. The little bit of dirt and oil that acumulates on a block will not cause the engine to run hotter either, that is why the engines are WATER COOLED not air cooled!

Consider this your "tip" for the day ya stupid Moron, oh wait calling you a stupid Moron is like calling you Stupid twice, but wait you are twice stupid so I guess that is OK.

smarterthenu, come from behind your name and reveal who you really are if you're going to bash someone. Otherwise, you're opinion aint sh!t! Also, go back and read what was REALLY written in my post, and THEN quote me correctly. I never said anything about FORCING water anywhere. I also never said anything about a little dirt, lots of dirt, or whatever about the dirty motor. I just said a "layer of dirt and oil", THAT'S ALL. And your discovery of water cooled motors, BRILLIANT my boy, BRILLIANT. Perhaps you hold the key to cold nuclear fusion too. Now, go have yourself a cup of shut the phuck up go wash your dads truck. FYI, I'm not going to entertain a response to your future post. Next time I'm going to charge you for my tips. Have a good day!

Shoestring... nice!

As for your K&N, cover it with a couple plastic bags and masking tape them to the intake tube. Use 2 or more, in case one has a hole in it. No duct tape, it'll leave glue on the tube.

If anyone else is doing this, with the stock intake, I recommend leaving the engine running. If the truck dies, you have an idea of where you just sprayed - and thus where to look for water. If the engine's off while you wash, and then it won't start, you have no idea where to start.

I've been pressure washing the engine compartment for more than 27 years on my autos. I do it at least 1 time a week on my '02 Dak. I can't let my engine compartment look hillbilly and greasy (kinda reminds ya of one of them tobacco chewing 87 IQ rednecks all greasy and nasty). On the old style points type engine and the new type distributor all it needs is the Distributor covered and any open element air cleaners bagged. If you don't do this prepare to dry it out. You put more water on the engine driving in the rain than Noah with the Arc. It doesn't hurt anything at all except get the distributor wet. Every time you pull into the quarter car wash spray it off just like you do the outside, those that think it will damage anything under there is still sliding out from under a rock left by the stone age. I bet they don't even wash their nuts 'cause it may damage fine hairs, they just deal with the smell along with their boyfriends. And at least 3 times a year I put my truck on a rack and steam clean the frame and under carriage, this prevents rust and corrosion.
